❛❛ it’s a gift for you — i’m nowhere near as good an artist as you, but it’s just a little something mom. ❜❜ the little gift is tied in gold and purple, a present given without any occasion other than the sheer warmth the child has always felt in the presence of his mother. nate delicately unwraps the canvas, revealing the portrait of his mother with a flower in her hair. for luck. his father always says. hands move excitedly, ready to see her reaction. ❛❛ — i wanted to thank you for teaching me out to paint ! ❜❜

ALL DAY ! ❜❜ excitement drips from his expression as the boy holds up his painting, it’s something he wants to show mal, in the safety of inside where they won’t get dragged into something too draining or terrifying. he’s trying to entice her to stay inside with him, and though nate knows it might not be mal’s IDEAL evening, he’s trying to give it a shot. ❛ — i PROMISE it’ll be fun ! ❜❜

❛❛ try this brush — it’s one of my mom’s favorites, and it’s one of mine to. it picks up the little things ! i really like it. ❜❜ he’s always here to help others, and evie is a cool friend to have. she makes him feel warm, especially when they sit and just do their work together. she, engrossed in his design, and him, eyes focused in on an interpretation of his home. ❛❛ — add some red. it’ll make the colors blend well ! ❜❜

❛❛ i promise i’ll write — it’s only a few weeks away, and besides, i’m very excited to go see the southern isles with my friends. aunt cass is going to be there too, so i’m sure it will be alright. ❜❜ all his life, he has grown in a circle of light. his parents, his siblings, everyone. they’ve given him so much warmth, but true radiance bubbles from his grandparents — especially his grandmother. she welcomes him with nearly open arms, when he smiles, dimples on show for her. ❛❛ — i’m going to miss you so much ❜❜

❛❛ THANK YOU — honestly, speeches aren’t my thing at all. my sisters are far more articulate than i am, and i was practically dying up there on that stage today. you saved me! ❜❜ his apprehension at giving such a speech has already added to anxiety , not to mention the very moment that nate choked up on the most important part — it’s not until his friend can step in do they have a moment of breathing. he pants, heart relaxing from the sheer fear of public speaking. ❛❛ — seriously, i owe you one! ❜❜

❛❛ thank you for welcoming me. — its been so long since i’ve come here, but you have always been so welcoming and kind. ❜❜ the prince smiles and bows to queen ariel. a friend of his mothers, and an ally to corona, ariel’s kingdom was a favorite of nate’s to visit when he was younger. all the people were so kind to him, and the adventures he went on were unforgettable. ❛❛ i’ve missed this place! it’s been what — six years? i can’t believe it. ❜❜

❛❛ no no no — i’m getting into the zone to paint. — i don’t look silly at all ! ❜❜ yes, the paint on his nose is a marker of failure, but nonetheless, the prince attempts to get a serious face when explaining his latest artwork to his sister. he scrunches his nose, paintbrush in hand as his hand glides over the art canvas in front of him. it’s supposed to be a tree. but the colors are all warped and infinitely wrong. ❛❛ — it’s not my best work, but it’s about the thought ! ❜❜

nathaniel holds himself upright against his horse, riding alongside his aunt cassandra. since childhood, she’s been the fun one. always telling him stories and giving him adventures of their own. years later — it’s no different. as they turn a corner, before he speaks up. ❛❛ what do you know about archery? i think i might take it up. maybe. ❜❜ he’s always been gentle, but the prince wants to expand and try something new. its something his dad instilled in him. ❛❛ it’s not like scary , is it ? ❜❜
