Do you share many memories of photos, business documents or other valuable data on your Wi-Fi network or Portable Wifi network? You are afraid that you will be hacking your Internet Box: using your network to download illegal content, stealing data shared on the network ... Follow the guide to protect your network from intruders and make it a real fortress!
Change the password of the utility of your Internet Box
Threats on the Wi-Fi network This is the first thing to do to secure your network. Indeed, your Internet Box has a configuration utility accessible via the Internet, secured by a username and a password by default. This utility is used to configure security options for example. You can access it by typing in the address bar of your Internet browser 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (see the manual of your Internet Box). Once you have logged in, change the default password in the corresponding field (for your Internet Box ID, contact your ISP).
Change the name of your Wi-Fi network
Secure your Internet Router The second step is to change the network name of your Internet Router (or SSID). It is visible when you do a search for wireless networks, example: Bbox_12345, DartyBox_123456 ... Indeed, the default name gives several indications to hackers (name of the internet provider ...). To change the network name, go to the configuration utility of your Box Internet. To prevent your wireless network from appearing in the list of Wi-Fi networks detected by your neighbors, you can also make it invisible. To do this, simply enable this option in the configuration utility.
Encrypt your wireless network with a security key
The next step is to encrypt your network with a security key. The famous WEP or WPA key used to connect your laptop, tablet or smartphone to your Internet Box. If your devices are compatible (see instructions), we advise you to choose a WPA or WPA 2 key with greater security. If your Internet Service Provider offers it, choose an encryption key with letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and special characters (punctuation, mathematical symbols). Note it and keep it carefully because you will be asked every time you want to connect a device to your network.
Filter devices that access your network
A bit like a customs officer at the border, you can decide who can access your network. For this you have to use the MAC address. Kezako? No it is not the address of Apple, but the specific address of the network module connected devices. It is in this form: Example 12: 34: 56: M7: B8: 99.
This is their "network" identity card.
You will therefore tell your Internet Box via the configuration utility which device is allowed to access your network. In the "Filter MAC addresses" option, activate the option and enter the MAC address of your authorized devices (available in the network settings or on the back of the device).
Protect your data on the network with a password
Do you have a shared hard drive on your network? To protect it, protect it with a password. So anyone who wants to access your data on the hard drive must have this pass. For this reason, the majority of network hard drives have encryption software that helps you secure your data.
