greetings, zak! if i may, i’d like to ask a question about your tot wingfic au (it’s perfectly fine if you choose to not respond to this question though, as the bringing up of idea has been from a few days ago and you may not be fixating on that at the moment)! i understand so far that an individual’s hereditary species is inherited from their parents, but which parent’s are inherited? or perhaps something determining which parent’s are to be inherited? (assuming that the parents each have differing species)

(no, this question most definitely didn’t come from the thought of either marius or giann inheriting their mother’s species (differing from their dad’s, ofc) and the angst of the concepts. this family can fit so much Angst—with a capital A—in them)

i will deffo answer this question but i will also share the whole concept for Context, since i only rambled on priv (aaahh, the trials and tribulations of having diff accs jHVKJSHDF) and also cuz i made So Many More Thoughts about this and u gave me an excuse to ramble, HAHA

welcome to my overly complicated tot wingfic au (which honestly was me just wanting an outlet for my useless avian knowledge)

the au worldbuilding

in this au, everybody has wings as a normal part of life, like the classic au dictates. but i added a new detail where every person's wings comprise of two species of bird: hereditary and secondary

the hereditary species is one that is passed down from the individual's direct lineage aka their parents. this species is what the wings manifest first as, from birth.

and the secondary species is a completely different species that develops later on and is somehow indicative of the individual's personality (be it by the species' symbolism or by the traits of the actual bird. haha, actualbird, thats me).

the secondary species can start showing its traits in from anywhere after the beginning of adolescence. it's MOST COMMON that a person's secondary species comes in during teen-young adult years, but it's deffo not unheard of for it to come later. the general thought behind this is that the secondary species only comes in once the individual has started to find and build their personality/core traits, whatever the hell that means for each person.

when both species traits come into the wings, the secondary feathers and hereditary feathers are both present in this kind of patchwork mix of feathers across the wings. it's Not one wing per species jahvkjhafsa, it's a Mix.

so irt ur question, the hereditary species can come from either parent!! and this gets decided by the via genetic gacha. i use this term not just comedically, like, the punnett square and classic genotype inheritance doesnt work here. why? because MAGIC. the universe already has wings, im not gonna try and add science to this ajhvfjhsfvjkashfa.

from which parent the child inherits the hereditary species from is completely random. but there are a lot of stories and beliefs that say that it could also be a sign of which parent the child takes after.

keep that last bit in mind, im gonna use it for the marius angst u mentioned hehe

OH ADDITIONALLY, once the secondary species come in, its uhhhh amount of feathers across the wings (like, in comparison to the hereditary) will vary after each molt. it's not always an equal 50% hereditary, 50% secondary. for example, upon the first molt where the secondary traits manifest, the secondary species feathers will be relatively few compared to the hereditary. a few molts later, the secondary can be More than the hereditary. and a molt after that, theres a possibility the secondary can recede and show less feathers as well. as to why this happens, the general belief is that secondary feathers---cuz theyre linked to ur Own self---manifests stronger when you actually get to Be Yourself and then begins receding when youre suppressing who you are, whatever the hell that means for each person.

okay i will employ a lot of these details later on, but first. TEAM'S WINGS!!!

the team's wings

brief ramble on all of the species i currently have in mind, w the first species being the hereditary and the second one after the + being the secondary. in some of these, i go on a plot brainworm ramble, so bear w me

luke: peregrine falcon + raven

this whole idea started with luke, actually KJHVKJHDVFKAJS. anyway

luke cant remember from which of his parents the falcon came from, but either way, he values the brown-barred wings very much. theyre a memory of loved ones no longer here.

when he was a kid researching hereditary species with mc, mc laughed a lot at how peregrine falcons are also known for their diving. they are the fastest creature in the animal kingdom when they do their signature dive, just flying up way high and then hurtling down from the sky

luke: whysit funny?

mc: because it's like you! you just go into everything headfirst!!!!!!

(later on, when hes no longer a kid, he felt an odd kinship to the etymology of the bird's name. "peregrine" means "wanderer", and at some point of his life, he indeed will feel lost)

then once he hits 16-17 years old, the raven feathers come in.

and he hated them.

it looked like the black feathers were marring him, looked like it was staining him in shadows.

16-17 years old was the same period of time luke got caught up with the NSB. soooo i figure you can connect the dots on how he came to the conclusion that his secondary species was a manifestation of his darkness.....

later on, when he confesses this anxiety to mc, mc will lovingly bonk him on the head for conveniently only fixating on the negative symbolism of the raven (harbinger of death, foreboding, etc.) forgetting all the REALLY COOL THINGS ravens also are that fit him very well (extremely intelligent problem solvers, great in groups, protective of their territory and their flock)

mc: eurasian tree sparrow + release dove (domestic rock dove)

mc had always related to her hereditary species. the eurasian tree sparrow is So So Common and she sees them everywhere and theyre....nothing special. theyre little guys going about their little lives, and for a while, she saw herself like that too. run of the mill, small, and ultimately inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

her secondary species came in when she was in law school, and she thought it was a biiiiiit on the nose. cuz okayyy she gets it. shes pursuing law because she believes that justice and hope can prevail. but she slowly grew to like it.

because she doesnt just believe in hope. shes dedicated to be the one to bring it to places where it seems like a lost cause.

ALSO: i was in a VERY BIG luke/mc mood while conceptualizing this, so i also made up this whole fic plot irt luke and mc where like.

luke feeling even more guilty when he reunites w her. he sees her and god, the contrast could not be anymore obvious.

here he is, a symbol of death and sadness. here she is, a symbol of love and hope.

after luke confesses the shitty way he sees himself and his secondary species and mc tells him YO, RAVENS R GREAT?? IDIOT?? he continues to be dumb and talks like "BUT LOOK AT YOU, YOURE PERFECT, even your feathers show that youre better and i Do Not Deserve To Be With You and---"

mc: did u know that doves are annoying

luke: w. what

mc: they are Annoying birds. stubborn as hell too. i went to a friend's wedding once and a release dove tried to steal my wallet, it would Not frigging give up. i had to give it a bagel for it to leave me alone

luke: ??????

mc: my POINT is that....you are making me out to be way more perfect than i am. i am annoying and stubborn and i dont give up on things. sometimes thats good, sometimes that gets me into bad situations. but at the end of the day im not the perfect person you see me as. the same way you are not the irredeemable killer you see yourself as, either.

mc's whole spiel here basically pointing out that luke is seeing things in black and white, both figuratively and literally, and thats not how it frigging works.

as they talk, their wings come to embrace each other, and nothing is just black and white. both of their wings are a patchwork of browns, blacks, whites. both of them are amalgamations of the cards life dealt them and what they chose to do in the face of that. both of them are messy

and mess is okay. mess makes a space for something new to be created. something thats Them.

artem: ornate hawk-eagle + luzon bleeding-heart

the species he inherited from either kimberly an garner or bryan wing (HAHAHAHAA LAST NAME IS WING) is a Large, Intimidating bird. these are eagle wings, these are wings meant for soaring, wings meant to reach far and wide. it's a lofty legacy to live up to

when his secondary species came in during his time in law school, artem was initially confused because he had no idea what it was. the new feathers were just gray, and that could be Any bird. was his secondary species a pigeon?

close enough. when he gets it looked at by a doctor for a routine check-up, he's told it's the luzon bleeding-heart pigeon

when he told neil about it, neil thought it was quite fitting

artem: huh? why?

neil: well, the birds themselves are VERY meek and super shy and extremely reclusive, just like you

artem, unimpressed: haha.

neil: but theyre fierce too and will fight to the death if needed

artem: do you think im going to kill somebody???

neil, ignoring him: plus, theres the whole symbolism too. pretty obvious, dont you think?

artem: ?

neil: bleeding heart. youre a lot more empathetic than many people think you are

SO OBVIOUSLY VYN'S HEREDITARY IS SNOWY OWL, and this species is one he got from his father's side of the family. it's the iconic Haspran Species.

and vyn has only this species for a While. his secondary species only comes in in 2028, when hes 25 years old. aka, when he moves to Stellis and makes his own name, both figuratively and literally

i havent figured out what the secondary species is tho yet. i wanna go heavy on the symbolism here of building one's own identity, so the bird has to be carefully picked. ive been......trying and failing to pick for DAYS

quarterweeb (on twitter and ao3) genius-ly suggested that marius' hereditary species is a peafowl. on my og twt thread she said "since they're "rich" birds who were nearly plume hunted to extinction (blah blah family/business metaphor) + i want him to be a peacock." I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. and she also suggested that his secondary species be a "parrot or cockatoo feathers bc they're loud needy and fast learners" I ALSO LOVE THAT SO SO MUCH.

i very much subscribe to the secondary species being some kind of loud chatty colorful bird, tho im still working out the specific bird i wanna choose. and i VERY VERY much subscribe to the one of austin von hagen's species' being a peacock.

but then ur ask came. and man, i now do not want marius to have inherited his hereditary from austin. giann inherits from austin, but marius gets his hereditary species from his mom

whats the species? I DUNNO!!! im thinking of picking a very musical/creative bird, since mrs. von hagen herself was a prolific composer and artist. but yeah, god, marius gets his hereditary from her and

it kinda messes him up sometimes. because hes not her. because shes dead.

because he took her place.

when marius only had his hereditary species traits in his wings, when he was a kid still trying to understand the ghost in this family, sometimes he'd see his dad look at him in this really gentle and sad kind of way. marius tries stay out of his dad's way after that. it's cruel to keep reminding his dad of someone he loves who isnt here anymore. marius is just the placeholder, the second-rate son, the one that serves as further insult to injury

when his secondary trait come in during his teens, it's Loud and Bright and hes so relieved because the less his wings look like his mom's the better. and those feathers stay quite prominent!!! theres a lot of em!!

right until he returns to stellis and has to take up pax. and then the secondary species traits start to recede

because he cant be fully himself anymore, he cant be Marius. he has to be a von Hagen. it really messes him up, but he does what he has to do to keep the family legacy alive

he thinks it's the least he could do...

im definitely doing the basic thing of tracing and using references, but 90% of the time the way the drawing looks changes drastically. like for sure, this is a thing that i have to keep practicing and all and i won't give up! it's just kinda frustrating at times that it's not... consistent?

hi hellooooo, what do you think would it take for each of the nxx boys to curse out someone else in the nxx? how quickly will it take for them to get pissed, who'd they most likely curse out first, what words do they use, how do the others react, the whole shebang ykyk. e.g. not just dammit or crap, actual swear words (f-word, b-word, etc.) also sorry if this is a bit too vulgar idk, have a nice day!!!

heyo nonnie! you def came to the right person bc i have a fucking bigass sailor's mouth, not that i've ever used it to cuss out someone (in their presence at least lmaoo) but i do know my way around the cuss words skndfksn. actually, i use fuck daily, are we sure its considered a 'bad word' LMAOOO

the nxx and their anger: will they cuss each other out? (+ habits)

Marius:

i'd like to think he's incredibly slow to anger. actually, most of them are incredibly hard to anger, but marius would be the zen one. he's grown up with two-faced people his entire life, if he were to get mad at every little wrong turn he'd get sick. so he's really slow to anger in general. it's also a public image thing. he can't get mad or else the media would eat that shit right up.

the thing about marius is that he's loyal tho, so for someone to rile him up properly you'd have to start insulting his family and/or his brother. in lost gold, when his 'uncle' lowkey betrayed him, he wasn't really mad? he was surprised and sad, but not mad. while in the one argument he gets with artem, he starts to get heated bc artem implies giann is not what he seems.

marius doesn't really get mad, but he does hold onto resentment. he does treat artem colder compared to, say, vyn. i think the only one of the nxx that could get marius to break is artem. honestly vyn could as well, but there's no point. unless vyn tells him he's too attached to giann, then they have a problem.

as to what words he'd use, im not... sure? i think his anger would be burning hot with indignation. i guess some of the worlds he would use would be: son of a bitch, motherfucker, cunt, prick, asshole, fucker. he'd also get hella creative with his cusses. like, he'd call someone an 'asswipe' or things like that.

he'd lay heavy on insults and bring up dirty laundry tho. living in his world taught him to hold on to pieces of information that may benefit him later (re: resentful). he'd be the first to switch from insults to fists if he's the one who's incredibly mad. a slow build-up to an explosive climax.

Artem:

he's a lawyer, so i don't think he has the instinctual habit of trying to cuss someone out. he's the poster child for 'use your words'. his anger is definitely more explosive than the others. quick to burn, quick to dim. he's more likely to yell out his arguments should he be mad instead of cussing someone out. he's more likely to pinch the bridge of his nose, breath in, and move on.

that's not to say he doesn't curse. like luke, he has a filter, but that filter is relegated to his own home. he'll yell fuck when he gets hurt at home while only hissing in pain out in public. he'll say shit when he drops something. (he also seems like the type of person who apologizes to inanimate objects after bumping into them). artem would favor trying to solve things with discussions.

in terms of getting mad at the nxx, i think the most likely candidates to get him mad are vyn and marius. like marius, artem is incredibly loyal to the people around him. the second marius mentions neil, artem starts to get defensive. however, artem doesn't let that argument last long and it fizzles out after he (mildly) insults marius, saying he has no time to argue with him. again, he uses his argumentative prowess to get out of a situation before it starts getting too out of hand. vyn and artem would argue, but wouldn't reach the stage of cussing each other out either. artem would want to bail before that point, but would still hold his own against the conversation driving dr. richter.

the breaking point for artem cursing out the nxx would be someone putting mc/rosa in danger, and even then it would be mild. he'd call them 'idiots' but that's not even a good cuss word. you'd have better luck hearing him say 'motherfucker' after accidentally cutting himself with a knife while chopping onions.

Vyn:

oh i genuinely think he cusses on the regular, but it's under his breath/mumbled and in his home language: svartish. he doesn't cuss at all, mostly bc he can't grasp how. like, i have this hc that vyn is still learning the bells and whistles of stellan, so he just... cant use slag or cuss words correctly. that's why he sounds so prim and proper. but he picked up cursing when his father mentioned that people like that sounded dumb. stick it to the man, vyn.

he's also really quick to anger, but he doesn't let it control him. his anger would feel more like a bright flame and then smothered to burn under the surface. cold, calculating anger with an initial red hot spark.

he's another one i think that values a verbal smackdown compared to just throwing out cuss words willy-nilly. he likes to be in control of the situation, only engaging in an argument only if he knows that he will emerge victorious. you could throw him some curveballs and start revealing things about him, but that wouldn't warrant such an explosive response that is cussing someone else. he uses cuss words a lot more colloquially, even if people don't understand him.

in order to get him to cuss, in my opinion, it would have to be a life or death situation, and even then it would be super small like 'not my partner you bitch' or something similar.

within the nxx, i don't think he'd let it get to the point of anger with them, mostly indignation and a couple of scoffs, in his head he's calling them: 'bastards, idiots, assholes,' in svartish along with other svartish curses.

Luke:

he's also one that uses curses like he's sprinkling pepper on a dish, but he knows how to filter himself. but! he's one that will actively go out of his way to cuss out someone. his anger is controlled, but he has somewhere it can go: his agent raven mode. when he gets mad, he gets quiet and starts shaking with rage. if it weren't for his training in the nsb, he'd be the type to start crying when he gets incredibly mad. instead, he goes quiet and lets that rage fuel agent raven.

if it weren't for the rating tears of themis has on the app store, i'm like 89% sure that this man would have called people he was beating up 'bastards, fuckers, sons of bitches and assholes.'

in order to beat up someone in the nxx tho, it'd be super hard. mostly because he's so far removed from their problems. he has no link to giann and neil, and idk what his directive is considering the government sent him (IM LOOKING AT YOU ASSHAT). so.. unless they directly insult mc/rosa, i don't think he'd get mad at them? besides, if you've got luke mad, it's already a little too late. he's coming for your head one way or another. honestly he's one that would rather use his fist rather than cuss someone out.

if i had to pick, though, he'd get incredibly mad at vyn, marius, and artem in that order. vyn is a controlling type, a puppeteer of sorts and luke kinda is too. they'd clash heads in terms of principle, but i don't think he'd get mad at vyn unless he started opening him up like a jawbreaker and exposing his layers. in that instance he would walk away and tell him to 'drop it, asshole' or he'd genuine punch vyn to shut up. cuz vyn would get going on a tirade and he knows what buttons to press. marius would be irritating and put up his mask, which im 77% luke can see through on the first time he meets him. i can't see him getting mad at artem for nxx reasons, but i can see him getting mad if it has something to do with mc.

luke curses as a warning. his fists follow shortly after.

Reactions:

i think everyone in the nxx would have the gut reaction to stop whatever was happening in terms of verbal lashing (except vyn. if vyn is a bystander he will let it play out unless the argument has any inclination of going physical). he already did with marius and artem, who's to say luke's wont be different?

the rest of the nxx would at least try to defuse the situation, bring attention to the subject itself, or literally tell them to stop.

and well, yeah. there you have it nonnie! my take on if they cuss each other out or not. honestly the only tension they have with each other is being in love with mc, which is why i don't really see them cussing at each other. (aside from the giann vs neil factions). honestly, once giann and neil get found and the tension ends they'll be a well-oiled machine.
