Thinking about the purpose of the Emperor’s Coven. Belos said way back that he wasn’t intending on doing anything so “boorish” as invading the human realm, and I believe him. I don’t think he’s planning a conquest of the human ream, he thinks humans are superior to witches.

But if he’s intending to wipe out all witches with this energy draining spell, it doesn’t make sense for there to be a whole coven that isn’t included.

The best and brightest witches... even though the coven system was more a means to get everyone branded, you have to admit, the existence of a coven that is “lol, no, you guys are okay to practice all forms of magic, even tho I said that was bad” is a liiiiiitle bit suspicious. Anyway, I’m wondering if the intent is... to make an example of them. You kill most witches with your draining spell, you open a portal to the human realm, and there’s this army. This army of the best and brightest, and, by Belos’s system, the most technically “impure” witches, the closest to being “wild witches” as witches that practice all magic types. They’re frightening, they’re powerful, they’re some of the best witches on the isles. Maybe he even did order them to attack. Being in the emperor’s coven separates you from your family, most of them might not even care about all the witches that died, after all the conditioning to be ruthless.

Belos kills as many witches as possible. He proves to the world that witches are real, that they’re dangerous. That he can protect them. It’s all another show. Another show to ingratiate the humans to him, to make them respect him as a true, proper witch hunter, as the savior of humanity. He alone can save them from the witches. He and his brother’s childhood wish will FINALLY be fulfilled (preferably with his “brother” by his side).

Hunter had read extensively about Grimwalkers, the artificial lifeform made from the emperor's most coveted materials. All so that he would have a version of the man before him that wouldn't ever betray him.

Caleb reaches his hand to console Hunter, but Hunter slaps it away.

"I don't need your sympa—"

Without hesitation, Caleb closes the gap between them, enveloping Hunter into a tight hug. This poor child, he had seen it through his memories, through his words—the unbelievable betrayal, confusion, and loneliness that wreaked havoc in his heart.

Who was Hunter? Where did he belong? What was right and wrong? Despite that, he seemed to intuitively know the right path. He was warm and loving. Desperately craving friend, family—love.

Hunter is frozen in his grip. Caleb wonders if this is the closest thing to holding the child he never got to meet before he had passed. Hunter in a way was his very own.

In the short moments he had found himself in this child's mindspace, he already felt tethered to him. Flapjack had also shared the same fondness.

It wasn't because he was a grimwalker or clone or whatever Hunter wanted to say to justify his appearance or mannerisms.

"Grimwalker, Golden Guard, Half-a-Witch, or even me— Those aren't you. Just be Hunter. Whoever Hunter wants to be. That's enough."

To Caleb, Hunter is family.

I was thinking about that post you made, about how it seems like Scouts apparently can just *quit* so long as they at least join a different Coven. And... Hunter really had no idea what he was doing in ASIAS, didn't he? He tried to force the EE to join the EC because he was so convinced that it would be great for them, but they really could have just walked out immediately after getting branded if they felt like it. Wouldn't even have lost any magic. No wonder Darius was like "wtf pointless."

THEY REALLY COULD HAVE

I mean, idk, maybe there's like... a mandatory period of time, like, you have to serve for a certain amount of time before you can resign so you're not just keeping all our magic then bouncing, or they still might not have been able to get their palisman back, but YEAH.

Also the fact that Severine was apparently in the tiny cat coven, then in the emperor's coven, then back in the tiny cat coven again, maybe implies that there IS a way to unseal your magic and put you in a different coven? Despite that every other time we get any info on the covens, it says "that's it, you're stuck in that track forever." Or did Severine join the EC with only whatever magic the tiny cat coven gave you?

Hunter: We're going to be friends forever, yeah?!

The EE, submitting their resignation forms as soon as possible: Dude, no, also, please quit your job and take a nap.

Me, sprinkling a little foreshadowing in for the one (1) plot point I actually have planned out: Ohohohoho, I am such a clever little author :) I cannot wait for this to be read and dismissed only to immediately kill anyone who remembers an indeterminate number of chapters down the line :)

Like in all seriousness, Alador and Odalia are a connecting point for the Hexside rebellion AND the CATTs. Hunter insinuated the Abomatons as a potential private army against Belos and I can see him considering that now. Wild witches were investors. This could follow up on Odalia taking the kids’ scrolls.
