omg bestie u read trc!!? tell me ur thoughts!! or not <33 i hope ure well <33

MOON HI omg i missed u how are you

YEAH yeah i finished call down the hawk like two days ago it was so ugh like UGH. im gonna have to find mi somewhere bc idk how i'll be able to wait until school starts back up. it's been like sooo hard for me to read books lately so it took me like a month to get through all of them minus blue lily which was my favorite and took a week but i still loved these shits so much.

favorite characters were like. gansey because he's gansey but also NOAH šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– noah was soooo fucking. i love that kid so much and i'm so sad we'll never get to see what he was like before he died :(. noah also continually reminded me of @ aries so much and that's part of why i loved his character so much. he was so much like aries. ily aries.

my fave book was blue lily, lily blue. god blue lily was so good i loved every bit of it but the raven king !!! fuck shit that was some goooood horror like damn i wish there was more horror in novels like that i absolutely died at That One Scene with adam. henry was also a welcome change in pace from the chaos of the rest of the characters. i didn’t like him in bllb but he’s better now <3

let me tell you the books were naaaaawt at all what i expected because mostly i knew them as Those Gay Books that tumblr liked or maybe it was just this one blogger who liked them so anyways i was surprised at the plot. like. psychics :0 magic :00 not what i thought it would be. also the person i followed really liked gansey and adam and ronan and so when i read the summary of the raven boys i was like surprised that there was this random chick named blue. shocked, even. who was she.

they were incredible books tho i'll admit like genuinely would have me hooked if i could stand reading for longer than an hour at a time. like the plot was so well written and worldbuilding was so amazing and the characters were all so mwah mwah blorbo. it's only been like 6 months since i started book 1 (im pretty sure it was late december) i feel so nostalgic for the early days :). stupid fucking gansey with his stupid fucking notebook, ronan who had chronic ā€œim obnoxious" disease. adam and his whole thing:(.

i find it so kind of funny sad how ronan and adam and like. and he. and. him punching adams dad like that was whew. also spent the entire book in distress that adam was sticking around so that he could ask glendower for the favor. :(((like that broke my heart ADAM YOURE STRONGER THAN THIS I SWEAR YOU CAN DO IT you are capable of great things babey:((((((.

as for book two. hmmmm. hmmmmm. im forced to admit i didn’t like the dream thieves as much. not that it was a bad book it was a great book but adam was like having a mental breakdown and so he was being mean to everyone and then ronan was taking drugs like candy under kavinsky’s supervision and that also made me sad. to quote myself ā€œi always want more complex characters and storylines with realistic trauma and reactions until my favorite character is meanā€ snsjdjdnd. mr gray was like šŸ”«šŸ”«šŸ”« i didn’t like him but then he was redeemed i suppose. he’s aight, esp with how he protected the kids in later books.

when i was reading i liveblogged in kestrel's server because @littlebluejane had read the books before me and provided excellent reactions to my reactions. was reading out of a paper book so i have like several pictures of pages of the best lines and ouch it hurts so bad. like the dynamic between blue and ronan was so good :(((asshole who cares and asshole who doesn't. the ā€œwrong demon" line from when adam and ronan were driving around town haunts me to this day, and then blue and noah <333 they were in love but platonically.

[SPEAKING OF NOAH when i finally connected the dots in book four and got to the scene where NOAH is the one telling gansey that glendower saved him i lost my god damn mother fucking mind. like holy shit. HUHH. i will never recover. ever ever.]

i would mention shit from like cdth but i just finished it and the series isn’t done yet so we can’t find all the fun easter eggs and. mostly i’m just sort of reeling. so much happened in this book but mostly the summary on the inside was misleading because it implies hennessy and farooq-lane and ronan are all going to coincide but i don’t think farooq-lane even gets to look at the two of them. very misleading smh. parsifal was on my shitlist at first but after he died he’s off the hook ig. matthew and his whole THING killed me absolutely slaughtered me. also the implication that aurora was based off someone else. yeah. a Lot of stuff happened in this book. yeah.

ne ways this got so so long i’m sorry i had to relocate to my notes app bc i was like wait this doesn’t make any sense this is all jumbled up so then i regrouped i rearranged i rescouted and now we are here. at the end of this post. sorry moon sorry followers have fun reading all of this. read the raven cycle. four books all roughly 400 pages by maggie steifvater. good yes yes good.

    actuallycuteanimals :

    "are human rights being compromised?"

they're killing wildlife for profit. who cares if they get shot out there? it's what they deserve.

Okay, so I don't want to go too deeply into this because this is just meant to be an animal media blog.

Poaching seems to conjure an image of a greedy villain, profiteering off of $90 000 per kilo of rhino horn*. Poaching is not *just* rhinos and leopards and tigers being killed - poaching is *any* illegal hunting or catching of animals or plants.

If your children are starving you aren't going to think 'oh but what about the poor animal it might go extinct', you're going to go and kill that giant sable antelope because it contains enough meat to feed your entire family for weeks. You will kill that rhino for $5 000 per kilo of horn* in order to send your kids to school so they at least have a chance of a better life than you. If you're living in a rural village and the nearest clinic is *several hours away*, for which there is only ONE doctor who tends to the ENTIRE AREA and the waiting line is SEVERAL DAYS LONG so you go to the local witch doctor who tells you that they can cure your dying spouse with crushed pangolin scales you will kill that pangolin. If your community relies on mealies for food but the elephants keep on trampling them, you and your village are going to do whatever you need to to drive off those elephants - even kill them.

If you can't find it in yourself to have sympathy for people in difficult situations with few options, then what about the people caught in the crossfire? What of that seven year old child the article mentioned, shot in the leg because they wandered too close? What of that disabled man shot dead because he didn't know he was in a restricted area? What of people who's communities are forcefully relocated several times over?

Sure, there are people who involved in poaching only because they are rich and greedy but those are not the people shoot to kill will affect (and even then, death penalty is inefficient in that it will cost more than a life imprisonment.) Shoot to kill also affects ability to find other poachers — if you shot five poachers, you've just shot five poachers. Arrest five poachers and you might uncover information on ten more — and perhaps even get enough information to dismantle an entire operation.

If the reason many people kill animals are because they are starving then the solution is simple: give them food. Give them housing. Give them clean water and education. Give them jobs.

You'll notice how the articles mention that shoot to kill doesn't reduce poaching. You know what does? Ecotourism.

'During the five years that the project was externally funded the community experienced a significant improvement in their standard of living. During each year of the project, more than 2,000 Japanese tourists visited the community generating sufficient income for the families involved to enable them to meet their monthly cost of food, and when operating at capacity the project employed a significant number of community members as drivers, cooks, gardeners, housekeepers, and in a few instances in managerial roles such as temporary wildlife rangers managing the forest around the villages.

Correspondingly, there was a decline in poaching. The community generally understood animals were a major tourism drawcard and needed to be protected to continue attracting tourists. This view was common throughout the kampongs (villages)... Noting that some members of the community continued to play an active role in many wildlife and forest conservation programs within the adjacent reserveĀ ' (unfortunately this project did fail because the funding for professional managers was withdrawn and the people of the village were not taught adequately how to manage everything by themselves, which lead to a steep decline in visitors and thus they had to go back to poaching to survive.)

Ecotourism is wonderful and is a great help towards both people and animals.

Obviously, these are complex issues that need way more investigation and perspectives than I have the time for or can offer but I’m going to close it here; you can read the articles and hopefully they can give more information and a broader starting point to this issue.

This is all I'm going to be saying on this to anons. If anyone wants to discuss this further, you are welcome to message me, leave a comment in the notes or send an ask off anon. Anon hate will be blocked.

*notice the discrepancy between the earnings of the people who kill the poached animal and the people who sell the poached product to the final buyer.

    is-the-primate-vid-cute :

This is exactly how Jane Goodall went from researching apes to being a humanitarian. When the villages surrounding the chimpanzee habitat were empowered, the forests and animals benefited because the locals no longer relied on poaching or logging.

If you want to be an animal activist you must also be a human rights activist.

    trainthief :

That reminds me of that one infuriating post that was like ā€œif you don’t understand an academic paper, it probably means it was poorly writtenā€ā€¦. Besties, romans, countrymen, if you don’t understand an academic paper it’s probably because it was written for a handful of experts in the very specific subfield for which it is relevant, and as someone who is almost certainly NOT one of those handful of experts it’s not in your realm of immediate comprehension. In many (most? all?) fields if you take even one step to the left of your scope of research you’re going to end up spending a lot of time catching up on context. Shockingly, this is because there’s a lot of information out there in the world, and you don’t know all of it. That doesn’t make you stupid, or the author stupid. No one has to be stupid in this scenario. This is a process called learning, just chill on it

let's hear it for our annabeth!!! so so excited for her!!!

    elfgrove :

Hair extensions and dye exist if they decide the hair color is that vital to the story. But it isn't really.

The "dumb blonde" stereotype Annabeth was overcoming in the novels was much more of an 80s~90s (and very early 2000s) cultural thing that doesn't hold the same level of relevance as a trope and assumption about people today in 2022. (Legally Blonde and Clueless were 2001 and 1995.)

What is very real today? Black girls and women are too often stereotyped as irrational, over-emotional, temperamental, and uneducated despite being (one of if not) the most educated demographic in the US -- making casting Annabeth as a black girl is a great update to her thematic struggle with stereotypes about her intelligence and ability to be the strategic leader the character is.

    warriorprincess1995 :

Fun fact! Water actually turns ā€œblood redā€ when it is contaminated by sulfur creating sulfuric acid. And scientists have discovered that around the time of the plagues a volcano went off that disturbed Egypt’s environment. So the plagues are scientifically proven. The other parts of the plagues are explained by the sulfuric acid river making the animals leave the river and escaping into the human population.

    vampiregirl2345 :

WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME THE PLAGUES WERE PROVEN

    kvothe-kingkiller :

if anyone wants a full list heres how they happened:

basically they all stem from a massive eruption of a volcano on the island of santorini off the coast of greece. the ash then floated over to egypt which kickstarted the plagues

    1) blood: the ash carried the mineral cinnabar, which has the capability of turning water red

    2) frogs: the ash also had many toxic and acidic substances so naturally, all the frogs are gonna flee the river

    3) lice: given what was going on insects would have burrowed into dead animals/peoples skin and laid eggs, which then hatched

    4) beasts: everything is getting poisoned from the ash and toxins, causing animals to freak the fuck out/die

    5) pestilence: toxins again

    6) boils: the ash would have caused storms that carried acid rain which when it fell, would irritate peoples skin causing boils

    7) hail: the storm again

    8) locusts: again with the insects and the amount of dead bodies and such which attract more insects. a lotta insects basically.

    9) darkness: the ash covered the sky, blocking out the sun

    10) slaying of the first born: given that children’s bodies were found in higher numbers than others, some archeologists think they may have been sacrificed to stop all the destruction, but they aren’t 100% sure about that. this is just me but I would say another possibility is that babies/kids are a lot more susceptible to toxins and shit, so while an adult may have been fine or gotten a bit sick, it might have been very dangerous/deadly for kids or babies

the volcano would also attest for the parting of the sea weirdly enough. the red sea was in fact the ā€˜reed’ sea, and was very shallow, probably waist deep or so. given the amount of shit dumped into the ocean from the volcano, this wouldve caused a tsunami to head towards egypt. the water would get sucked out from the reed sea right before the tsunami hit, letting people pass it easily, then the actual tsunami would hit, fuckin up anyone who tried to follow.

another theory is that the red water was caused by algae, which would cause the frogs and stuff to jump out as well. the algae also carried substances toxic to animals so if they ingested any they’d get sick and die, so more insects. in this theory there was a sand storm coincidentally that caused the rest

    some sources: X X

    wigmund :

The volcano wasn’t ON Santorini - it WAS Santorini, then called Thera. It completely blew away the Minoan settlements on the island and was one of the largest eruptions in human history.Ā

The tsunamis from the Theran eruption devastated Crete, weakening the then-powerful Minoan civilization, leaving them open to being invaded by the Mycenaeans.

The volcanic winter it created devastated crops in China leading to the fall of the Xia Dynasty.Ā

The abrupt and catastrophic loss of the people of Thera may have also inspired the myths about Atlantis.

    muppethole :

more people would be for prison abolition if they just tried to send mail to an inmate even once

    muppethole :

for almost a year now i’ve been trying to send a copy of the literary magazine i edit to an inmate who requested one. his prison prohibits any written materials that so much as mention drugs, weapons, criminal activity, or malicious violence of any sort. i’ve been poring over what’s available of the 95 volumes my magazine has printed over the years, and of those found 3 that might pass inspection. the first two were sent back undelivered two months after i sent them because one had a short story that alluded to a playground fight, and the other a poem that used the word ā€œfistā€ in a nonviolent context. The third was returned for the stated reason that its contents depicted the use of firearms. i reread the entire issue, there’s not a single gun mentioned in all its 120 pages.

while going back and forth with this guy trying to figure out how to get a copy of the magazine in his hands, two of my letters bounced back for unspecified reasons. i learned that inmates are not given their correspondents’ original letters, but scanned copies, often poorly reproduced and sometimes illegible. these people aren’t even granted the ink their loved ones used to pen their messages, or to hold in their hands the paper their loved ones held, if they’re able to receive their words at all.
