Headcanon; Rina in the War

It’s hardly a secret among other heroes that Rina has some hefty limitations due to her bad lungs. This doesn’t stop her from helping, though.

Largely, she’s taken a support role rather than being on the front lines. She has largely been using her quirk for damage control and for fighting more low-life thugs and looters rather than facing the League directly. 

With how criticized heroes have become, Rina has also taken to helping out of costume too; volunteering time whenever possible, and using her cooking skills to cook for the students of UA. After all, a full meal is necessary to keep one’s strength up, and is proven to significantly boost morale.

She doesn’t get as much time with her daughter anymore, but the two will send eachother memes and texts to keep eachother’s morale up. When asked if she’s worried about her daughter being on the front line, she always has the same response; “if I was worried, I would’ve never let her pursue a hero career.” She does have her fears, though, as any parent would, but she trusts Ari’s training and determination.

Mic never complained about it. He really did find her happy-go-lucky nature endearing sometimes, but other times, when she badgered him like that, it aggravated him, “I’m not trying to do anything, Emi.” He sighed, “I just need space sometimes. It’s how I think.” Indeed--and was also how he bottled up his emotions instead of finally opening up to people who cared. Every time he started, he stopped himself.

“I’m sorry,” he admitted, “just please give it a rest. I don’t want to discuss it.”

Shizuka nodded. She was an absolute lightweight and because of that she didn’t drink much, but she had gotten used to keeping a stash around the house for whenever Hizashi or Nemuri came to visit. Those two could run her out of house and home…

“You can stock up with anything you need, I’m not a drinker so I won’t bother with it. As for furniture, my house already has what you’d expect. Each of the guest rooms have a bed and a workspace set up, you’re free to take whichever room you like.”

She paused, furrowing her brow as she considered what else they had to talk about. “I already figured our individual workspaces would be more or less off limits, but that’s a given. Let’s see, we spoke about finances already…I think that’s about everything. At least that I can think of,” she said.

Hm. Maybe this won’t be as miserable as he thought. She seemed to understand his needs pretty well. Granted, his needs were very minimal; he was easy to please. “Then I’ll choose based on whatever will be the easiest for me to move into,” he nodded.

He drank the last of his water, and it faintly clacked as he placed it on the coaster, “I think that covers it, too. Most everything else, we can figure out as we go,” he sighed, brow knitting and his eyes fell shut, “I guess we should set up an appointment to... sign the marriage papers.”

How the hell was this legal? Quirk marriages had been outlawed for years, yet pro heroes were not only allowed, but required to have one. What kind of child did they even expect with a blood quirk and his erasure quirk, anyway? He would at least understand if he could understand what they were going for... but he didn’t. Was there some other point they had that he didn’t see? 

Well.. Shizuka was agreeable enough, and they had friends in common, and boundaries were established. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad.

“It sounds like you’re defeating yourself before you try… I’ll ask him about it I guess…” After all, he had no issue with getting in trouble. He often did, though for different reasons. And despite her shifting gears, he’s not particularly aware of why she might want to. 

“You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself…” Pot meeting kettle. “I am also not a good student, though it’s because I only recently started to learn academics… I do not see why it is needed, if we are meant to be combatants…” 

“Ugh! I know, right?!” Arisu groaned with sudden emotion at the statement, “I don’t know about you, but I’m gonna be on the front lines, punching villains in the face! My mom might have limitations, but, I don’t. I don’t have crappy lungs from smoking my whole youth.” 

She sighed, putting the bottom of her tie back in her mouth and grinding it in her teeth, “but, it’s whatever. It’s only for four years that we’ve gotta, then we’ll be off to our jobs as heroes after we graduate. Then we can pay people to do the paperwork stuff... or something.” She shrugged, “so... only recently, huh? Were you homeschooled growing up, or something?” That part caught her attention. Besides, it wasn’t often someone actually wanted to talk to her.

wow. so much had happened since their last chance meeting, and then well. the war. emi frowns at the thought, emerald eyes glancing to shota’s lower half when a pang hits her heart, and she snaps her gaze back to his, determined not to let him see her falter. she nodded her head as she listened to his account of taking eri into his care. he was such a sweetheart, that kid was going to grow up and live one hell of life with shota as her father. 

torn from her thoughts, emi lifted her head once the door creaked open after the click of the key. following shota inside, she took off her shoes by the door, and smiled warmly as she shut it behind her. “ wow, nicer than my place! ” she teased. “ though, would it kill you to get a paining or something? y’know! liven the place up? ” 

she grinned sheepishly and then casually looked away, giving shota a wave of her hand. “ i’m okay, thanks. ” there was a pause and a genuine look of worry on her features. “ .. do you? ” there was a pause and emi rubbed the back of her neck. “ uh.. need anything? i mean, it’s your place, but.. i can help– ” she looked back up, dropping her hand back to her side. “ if you’ll let me. ”

“Present Mic said the same thing,” Shota’s tone was as flat as ever, “I’m thinking I’ll put some of Eri’s art up. She likes to draw when she’s over with me. Sometimes my students give me art they did, I’ve considered framing some of them.” Where they got the time when UA’s training was so brutal, he wasn’t sure. He barely made time just to make food.

He could almost feel her glance at his leg--or maybe that was his own self-consciousness talking--and he swore he was past the point of hobbling on that leg. He was about to reject the offer... but he’d been nagged about doing that so many times. “...You know what, I could use it. It’s important to stay hydrated. Cups are in the cupboard beside the microwave.” He took a seat on one side of the couch, “so, how about you? How’ve you been holding up?” It occurred to him he’d been asking questions about her students and her hero work... he felt bad by now he hadn’t asked about her.

‘Fake fur?’  Star thought to herself.  Then again she hadn’t gotten as physically close to the animatronics like Arisu.  “Case.. ing?”  The young woman questioned out loud, then widened her eyes upon realization she had said that out loud, instead of thinking it in her head.  “Ah!  Y-You know.. I’m ah.. n-not so sure” eyes quickly avert from Arisu, moving her flashlight up ahead.

Then came the sound of tiny pitter pattering along the wall.  Indeed something had been crawling up there!  “Hey, uh.. y-you heard that to, right?”

Arisu would’ve questioned Star’s confusion, if she wasn’t busy trying to pinpoint whatever she just saw. School had taught her better than to be scared in this instance... but she really hated sneak attacks. Besides, she was supposed to be incognito. 

“Yes... I did,” just as quickly as she dropped the necklace, she brought it back up to her lips again, “uhm... I think I heard something in the training videos that said the robots get really active and quirky at night, and that’s why we’re here. That’s uh, probably all it is. Probably doesn’t even know we’re here, heh. So... who’s your favourite one? I always liked Freddy.”

“What are you looking at?” He’d long gotten over his insecurities about his scars. Didn’t make the stares any less annoying, though.
