A plant from the flax genus, containing a bast fibre and seeds that can be used to produce linen and linseed oil, respectively. It grows to 1.2 meters tall, flowering from May to September with flowers that last only a day. It's commonly seen growing above the waterline in cranberry bogs.
The flax flower is displayed by the Northern Ireland Assembly in the emblem of Northern Ireland, also representing Ireland in British one-pound coins, in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and other associated logos. It's also the national flower of Belarus. In early versions of "The Sleeping Beauty", the princess pricks her finger on a sliver of flax, which is sucked out by her children as she sleeps.
༶ ETYMOLOGY:
The name 'flax' comes from the Proto-Indo-European ‘pleḱ-’, which means “to plait”. "Linum" is associated with the Old English 'līne', that means “line”, “rope” or “cord”. Alternatively, it can be associated with the Proto-Indo-European ‘lei-’ (“to flow, pour”) because a flax is soaked in water during its retting. The epithet 'usitatissimum' is the Latin superlative of "usitatus" (usual, common, very common).
༶ ORIGIN:
Mediterranean region
༶ MYTHOLOGY:
Linen fabric was considered the symbol of light, purity, beauty and wealth. People believed that it's flowers could protect against witchcraft, black magic and sorcery. In European mythology, the plant was associated with Hulda, the Goddess of Weaving, who taught the humans how to grow, spin and weave flax plant into linen cloths. It's mentioned in the Bible, as it's said that Christ wore linen as he lay on his tomb. It's also referred as "the purest form of fabric".
The flax is associated with the Weaver Goddess, who spins the thread of life and weaves the fabric of the cosmos. In Greek mythology, it's associated with the Moreae, or Three Fates, also known as Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. The thread is spun in Clotho's spindle, measured by the rod of Lachesis and snipped by Atropos’ shears, the smallest of the three, but the most feared, as she does to the crone of winter.

A flowering plant from the spurge family, introduced to the Middle East in ancient times and associated with the crown of thorns worn by Christ. It can grow 1.8 meters tall and the sap is moderately poisonous, causing irritation on contact with skin/eyes and stomach pain/irritation of the throat and mouth/vomiting if ingested. This plant also does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C and thrives between spring and summer, producing flowers all year round.
þ ETYMOLOGY:
It's genus name derives from Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia (52-50 BC – 23 AD), who married the daughter of Anthony and Cleopatra and wrote that one of the cactus-like euphorbias was used as a powerful laxative. The name “milii” refers to the Governor of Réunion, Baron Milius, who introduced the species to France in 1821. The common name is due to the thorns and deep red bracts referring to the crown thorn Jesus had to wear during his crucification and his blood.
þ ORIGIN:
Madagascar
þ MYTHOLOGY:
This plant is highly related to Jesus Christ, representing the Crown of Thorns worn in his crucification because of its densely spiny stems and the red bracts of it's flowers.
