ok despite this game being exceedingly goofy, and the cut scenes actually being pretty sparse when it comes to both character and plot progression.... it is a little emotional to watch this little kid, the guy you've been playing as the whole time and building up and strengthening, just. fucking die.
OMORI SPOILERS
Maybe one of the reasons I don't sympathize with Basil very much is because I have had family tragedies (of course nothing like OMORI) of my own and I know how important family is and how painful a tragedy is.
But beyond the projection, I mean, put yourself in the character of Sunny.
Sunny, for all accounts, loved Mari, and Mari loved him too. From what we know, his mother loves him a lot, and while we don't know about his father before THAT it's implied he loved him too. He had friends who loved him and he loved, and while he was of course very close to Basil if not the closest, he had a lot of people on his life he loved too. No matter if he was angry at the moment, he certainly had no intention for that to ever happen to Mari, and he literally spends every single day of his life after it regretting it.
Now he commits a terrible mistake. He is all alone. He freezes, he doesn't know what to do. Sunny was always a quiet, shy kid, and this overwhelms him. He needs help. Basil comes. At last, a friend, your best friend! And instead of helping, he suggests the most baleful, horrible thing imaginable. Sure, Sunny goes with it -depending on how you interpret the descriptions in the wiki, Basil might have taken advantage of Sunny's catatonia- but at the end, he realizes he have commited the worst sin ever, and he will have to carry it for the rest of your life. Sunny cannot tell anyone else, or else Basil will suffer the same or worse. So he loses his friends, his family. The sister that he loved and she loved him back has her name forever sullied. What was an accident now turned into a sin.
Sunny then loses his family, his friends, his youth, his sanity, and God knows how much else to that. He suffers for years, all alone. And Basil isn't there anymore for him, even. He's alone. His attempt to "save him" was not only destructive, but completely pointless.
When Sunny finally decides to save Basil and tell the truth, he gets his eye broken, in a fight with his former best friend. Eye injuries are notoriously traumatic, so he will have to live with the sequels for the rest of his life, most likely. And what happens after the confession is ambigous (I would like to think their friends forgave them, at the very least), but it certainly wasn't very pleasant either. And now he has to restart his entire life.
If I was Sunny, I wouldn't see Basil as my soulmate, as a friend, or as an accomplice. Even if he was a kid, even if he was my best friend, even if I even loved him. I would see him as someone who betrayed me beyond what's even imaginable. I would barely forgive him. In fact, I would most likely hate him. And that's a tragedy too.

Summer break is coming up, and I’m so happy. There are stressors to it since I don’t get paid in the summer and have to take unemployment, but I don’t even care. I need a fucking break so bad. This year has been fucking brutal.
I can’t ever imagine going back to a job where I can’t take breaks throughout the year. It’s nice to get winter break, spring break, and summer break. I’m not sure my family understands this and I know they want me to get a “real” job, but these breaks literally help my mental health. I get to recharge and that is sooooo badly needed.
Just a few more days and I’m done until next school year!
i dont think i have covid (🧿 im still waiting on my pcr test results but the rapid test came back negative and i can still smell & taste) so i think i should make myself matzo ball soup to cure this cold i have. it didn't work last time but maybe it'll work this time
