talking machines; alphabets of dead languages

Men who gladly spend their lives in puttering among the alphabets of nature’s library, often alphabets of dead languages, at that, turn with light scorn from the proposal that we study the last chapter of the last book...       1

Then Uncle Harry stopped puttering with his [talking] machines and came out to be sociable with his sister.       2

1 Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935, wikipedia), “Humanness,” The Forerunner 4:1 (January 1913) : 20-25 (21) same (Ohio copy, hathitrust)

2 Charlotte Perkins Gilman “A Word in Season,” The Forerunner 1:14 (December 1910) : 1-5 (2) same (U Illinois copy, hathitrust)

But the old lady had a mind of her own, though much of it was uninhabited, and this generous burst of light set it to working... p 4 from “A Word in Season”

Cooking is one of the rare chores Monty never avoids. Well, it isn't even a chore, it's a pastime, and wonderful at that. It allows to cuddle and bestow kisses, to chat about everything and make food together. Henry is a better cook, because until meeting him, Monty preferred to eat in cafés and restaurants, and his best dish used to be omelette. But he is a quick learner and Henry is the best teacher (he is a professor for a reason). So they cook together or for each other, and this cooking is better than any signature dish in a posh restaurant. Because it is peppered with love which makes everything times and times better.

One fine autumn day, Florence returned to the Fernsby farm. She had not sent a letter about her arrival so everyone was surprised to see her again. Especially Dorothy, who was incredibly excited to finally meet her mother again. Unfortunately, she did not bring good news.

Florence told them how she traveled to Selvadorada. The journey had been long and difficult and once there she had tried to follow in William’s footsteps to understand where he was. She had traveled far into the jungle and learned that William and his group had disappeared while exploring an unknown area. No one had seen them for several years and everyone was convinced that they were no longer alive. "He talked about making life better for us," Florence cried. “But we already had everything we needed. If he had just stayed, it would not have mattered that we were poor.”

Everyone was shocked by Williams' death. They all had hoped that he would return together with Florence. He was buried next to his little brother Paul. Just like with Paul, they could not hold a real funeral because no body could be recovered. Despite this, two tombstones were created in their memory. They were laid to rest in Windenburg's cemetery where Algot and Wilhelmina also were buried. Arthur had a hard time understanding that he had lost his brothers almost simultaneously.
