So, after watching The Castle of Cagliostro last year and Future Boy Conan recently, I had it in my head that- in my ongoing personal mission to expand my anime horizons- I could by and large skip Studio Ghibli. I had seen Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, and while I adore the latter and appreciate the former, the lingering impression I got from Cagliostro and Conan was “yeah ok, I get what you’re about, Miyazaki: adventure boy, waifish girl, supporting scoundrel with a heart of gold, villain with a very angular face, some lesson about military bad nature good”. However, Cagliostro and Conan aren’t Ghibli movies, so I cynically decided I would watch their first movie- Castle in the Sky- to test that theory. “Cynically”, because literally everything about this looked like it was going to fit my preconceived notions to a T, rather than try something completely different like My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki’s Delivery Service or basically anything else.

I was right in that it was exactly what I was expecting, but the execution was so above and beyond those other projects that all my cynicism got crushed into dust. What a good fucking movie.

Steven just annoys her ALOT, because of how reckless and ARROGANT he is, but she also feels obligated to be around him. She has done her best not to show her disdain for him around Blu when she was younger, but regardless, she takes after her mom, and has ended up showing disdain more and more.

Its..complicated really...
