    Cleveland Indians-Minnesota Twins Series Preview

5.13.22-Aaron Civale RHP (1-2) 9.45 ERA Vs. Sonny Gray RHP (0-1) 3.48 ERA

5.14.22-Shane Bieber RHP (1-2) 4.13 ERA Vs. TBA

5.15.22-Triston McKenzie RHP (2-2) 2.76 ERA Vs. Joe Ryan RHP (3-2) 2.56 ERA

The Indians At A Glance- The Indians didn’t start the year too well and a seven-game losing streak dropped them to (7-12). Cleveland has won eight of their last eleven to get back to .500 at (15-15). Wednesday’s game was postponed due to a COVID outbreak in the Indians clubhouse. Terry Francona and just about the whole coaching staff are out due to some positive tests. Carl Willis will be the acting manager this weekend at Target Field. Josh Naylor is out due to COVID and the team sent Kirk McCarty back to Columbus. Cleveland recalled Richie Palacios and activated Yu Chang. The Indians were expected to trade Jose Ramirez, but the two sides agreed to a five-year $124 million extension this spring. He is hitting .297 with seven homers and thirty RBI this year. Andres Gimenez and Owen Miller are hitting .333 on the season. Josh Naylor was off to a great start before this COVID pause. Bobby Bradley was hitting just .118 before getting sent to Columbus. The Indians starting pitching hasn’t been great with a 4.66 ERA, which is twenty-fifth in baseball. The bullpen has been better with a 3.21 ERA, which is seventh-best. Shane Bieber has a 4.13 ERA in six starts. Emmanuel Clase has six saves, but has less than a strikeout per inning. Sam Hentges has had a breakout year allowing one run over 13 innings out of the bullpen. Trevor Stephan, Bryan Shaw, and Konnor Pilkington has been solid bullpen arms.

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins injuries and tougher schedule finally caught up to them this week. The Astros swept them and outscored them 21-3 in a three-game series. The Indians are in town for the weekend as the Twins look to get healthy and beat up on some weaker teams. Byron Buxton DH’d in the second game on Thursday and was taken out when the first game resumed. He has been dealing with hip soreness. Kyle Garlick will start a rehab assignment this weekend with Saints, which is great news because the calf injury sounded more serious. Chris Paddack was put on the 60-day injured list, which means he will have surgery on the elbow, but the Twins haven’t said if its Tommy John or not. Bailey Ober threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday and is progressive from a groin injury. Danny Coulombe will miss at-least two weeks with a hip injury that caused him to a leave a game earlier this week. There isn’t any new news on Carlos Correa (finger) or Dylan Bundy (COVID). Gilberto Celestino has been a revelation with all the injuries. He is hitting .341 in twenty-one games. Luis Arraez returned to action from COVID on Thursday. The Twins once had a six-man rotation, but the injuries have left Dylan Bundy, Bailey Ober, and Chris Paddack out of the fold. Jharel Cotton hasn’t allowed a run in 5 2/3 innings. Joe Smith still has a 10 1/3 inning scoreless streak.

What To Watch For- The Twins went (11-8) against the Indians last year. The Twins went (6-4) at Progressive Field and (5-4) at Target Field. Aaron Civale is (1-3) with a 3.31 ERA in six starts against the Twins. Sonny Gray is (5-3) with a 3.22 ERA in eleven starts versus the Indians. Shane Bieber is (5-1) with a 3.63 ERA in twelve games against the Twins. Triston McKenzie has a 5.95 ERA in four starts versus the Twins. Joe Ryan has allowed one run in twelve innings against the Indians. The Twins will have an easier schedule for the rest of the month, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Astros series was due to injuries and playing against a better team.

    The Rogues Rant #308

    May 5th 2022

Welcome to The Rogues Rant, an occasional look at all things Rugby.

    By Ron Wood

The Illawarra Referees will look a little different this weekend as the competition gets underway. This weekend is the Illawarra Rugby Referees "BATYR" Mental Health awareness weekend, Illawarra Referees in conjunction with Sydney Referees have partnered with "BATYR", a mental health awareness group focusing on reducing the "Stigma" that can surround mental health, especially in our rugby community. Our Referees will be wearing the "BATYR" elephant logo on their shorts this season as well as brightly coloured elephant socks for this Saturday's games to show the "elephant that is in the room" that is mental health and raising awareness of it. Where possible we will also be asking our first grade captains to wear the same socks. Mental health issues are becoming all too prevalent in our modern society, so please support our Referees with this great initiative and get the conversation going around mental health.

Let’s look at the details from last week’s Photo of the 1975 Caldwell Cup Champion Illawarra side. Did you pick out anyone you knew? The IDRU Life Members were John Martin, Geoff Shaw and Peter Woods. The two former IDRU Presidents were Terry Wetherall and Peter Woods. A youthful Tony Cheetham is the former Tech Waratahs First Grade Coach. The Squad Coach Harold Palmer is the Grand Father of recent Wallaby Dan Palmer who is now the scrum coach with ACT Brumbies. The three Wallabies, all from the very strong Kiama club of that era that won 9 IDRU Premiership Titles from 1966 through to 1976 were Geoff Shaw, Gary Grey and Brian Weir. Brian Weir played 10 tour matches for the Wallabies in South Africa in 1969. Gary Grey toured to France and Canada with the Wallabies in 1971 and played 5 Test Matches at Halfback in 1972 on tour in New Zealand, France and Italy. The very well respected Geoff Shaw played 68 times for Australia including 27 Test Matches, 9 times as Captain of Australia. He was inducted into the Wallaby Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Player of IDRU Grand Final each year now is awarded the Geoff Shaw Medal. Truly an impressive lot from 1975.

What a meritorious win for the much maligned Waratahs last week over the Crusaders. There was lots of emotion on display after the match as this long awaited winning performance was celebrated by a big crowd at Leichardt. It must now surely be onward and upward for the Tahs who proved to themselves and all their fans that they have the potential to beat anyone in this tournament on any given day. Coach Darren Coleman has shown wherever he has been that he has the ability to get the very best out of his players. Are we seeing that influence rising in the ranks of the Waratahs. The last two weeks of matches has suggested that the gap between teams from opposite sides of the ditch is narrowing which is a real shot in the arm for the game in Australia. The Aussie and Kiwi teams had three wins each last week and there are plenty of games this week that could go either way on current form. The Rogue scored four from six last week with the Waratahs and Brumbies causing the upsets. My tips for this week: Blues, Reds, Waratahs, Chiefs, Crusaders and Hurricanes.

Finally it’s Kick-Off time for the local comp. As of Thursday morning all matches are on with the one venue change being the Vikings V Campbelltown match now to be played at the Quinnies home ground. Keep an eye on the IDRU Website and Facebook Page for any late changes as they come through. Let’s have a look at the Round and make some predictions as to who will win. The Quinnies and Blueys match at Campbelltown Showground is somewhat of a mystery. Both clubs have had some significant changes to personnel and it will be interesting to see just how both clubs shape up for this one. I’ll go with the home side advantage. Campbelltown to Win. Bowral and Tech Waratahs meet at Eridge Park with an early start of 1200 Noon for Second Grade. The Blacks have lost a lot of their big names from the last couple of years with big injuries that will leave quite a few spots to be filled, while the Tahs have built impressively in the off season. The Tahs were strong in last week’s trials against Shoalhaven and Shamrocks and are looking likely to be the big improvers this year. Tech Waratahs to Win. Avondale are home to University at Gerry Cappetta Oval. University are reportedly a bit light on in the front row department so first up against Avondale is probably not what the Doctor ordered. They can expect a torrid afternoon against the Wombats as usual so I think I’ll go for the home side here. Avondale to Win. Neighbours Kiama and Shoalhaven meet first up at Kiama Showground in what should be a tough one as usual between these arch rivals. Shoalhaven showed plenty in the Saunders Oval trial matches last week although a little disjointed. After they went through last year without a loss I’ll go for the Shoalies to open this year with a close victory. Shoalhaven to Win. Camden travels to Ocean Park to play Shamrocks. Camden’s season build up has been severely interrupted by all the flood dramas around their area with their ground still cut off by water earlier this week. Shamrocks showed good trial form as well last week although they too have front row problems. I’ll stick with the home side here as well. Shamrocks to win. All First grade ,matches Kick-Off at 3.15PM.

Here’s what went on on this date in music history..

    March 17th

    1957 - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley bought the Graceland mansion from Mrs Ruth Brown-Moore for $102,500. (£60,295). The 23 room, 10,000 square foot home, on 13.8 acres of land, would be expanded to 17,552 square feet of living space before Elvis moved in a few weeks later. The original building had at one time been a place of worship, used by the Graceland Christian Church and was named after the builder's daughter, Grace Toof.

    1966 - Walker Brothers

The Walker Brothers had their second UK No.1 with the single 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore', (originally recorded by Frankie Valli).

    1967 - Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix Experience released 'Purple Haze' in the UK, (US release was June 19). Hendrix had read Night of Light, a 1966 novel by Philip José Farmer. In the story set on a distant planet, sunspots produced a "purplish haze" which had a disorienting effect on the inhabitants. It is thought that Hendrix took this as the idea for the songs lyrics.

    1967 - The Beatles

Working at Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles finished the recording of 'She's Leaving Home' after adding backing vocals to the track. Harpist Sheila Bromberg who was part of the string section on the track became the first woman to play on a Beatles recording.

    1973 - Dr Hook

Dr Hook's single 'On The Cover Of Rolling Stone' peaked at No.6 on the US chart. The single was banned in the UK by the BBC due to the reference of the magazine.

    1979 - Gloria Gaynor

Gloria Gaynor started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'I Will Survive.' The song was originally released as the B-side to a song first recorded by The Righteous Brothers called 'Substitute.'

    1984 - Van Halen

Van Halen's 'Jump' peaked at No.1 in the US. Over the years David Lee Roth has given various accounts of the meaning behind the lyrics, but most often says they are about a TV news story he saw where a man was about to kill himself by jumping off a building.

    1996 - Terry Stafford

American singer and songwriter Terry Stafford died of liver failure, at the age of 54. He is best known for his 1964 US Top 10 hit, ‘Suspicion’, (also recorded by Elvis Presley) and the 1973 country music hit, ‘Amarillo by Morning’. ‘Suspicion’ had the distinction of being sixth on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1964, when the Beatles held down the top five spots. 'Amarillo by Morning', was later covered by George Strait on his 1982 album Strait from the Heart. The song was once named the No.12 country song of all-time by Country Music Television.

    1997 - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley Enterprises of Memphis, Tennessee, lost its Court of Appeal battle to stop London trader Sid Shaw using the name of 'The King' on his souvenirs. The legal tussle with Mr Shaw, who ran a memorabilia shop called 'Elvisly Yours', had been going on for over 17 years. Speaking after the ruling, Mr Shaw said: 'I'm delighted. I've proved that Elvis belongs to all of us - Elvis is part of our history, part of our culture'.

    2004 - Ray Davies

The Kinks singer Ray Davies received his CBE medal from the Queen at Buckingham Palace for services to the music industry.

    2005 - Justin Hawkins

Justin Hawkins from The Darkness became the centre of the latest hands-on activity at Madame Tussauds in London. His wax double would judge the air guitar skills of visitors who would be invited to play an imaginary guitar with smoke and music pumping out. Hawkins said: 'I find the process of air guitaring rather silly. What makes a good air guitarist? Alcohol.'

    2008 - Ola Brunkert

Ola Brunkert, the former drummer with the Swedish group ABBA, was found dead with his throat cut at his home in Majorca, Spain. Brunkert died after he hit his head against a glass door in the dining room at his home. He had managed to wrap a towel around his neck and leave the house to seek help, but collapsed and was found dead in his garden. The 62-year old musician had played on every Abba album the group released and had toured with the group.

    2010 - Alex Chilton

American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer, Alex Chilton died in hospital of heart problems in New Orleans aged 59. As a teenager Chilton had been a member of The Box Tops who had the 1967 hit 'The Letter' and later in 1971 co-founded the power-pop group Big Star, with Chris Bell. In the 1980s both R.E.M., and the Replacements cited Big Star group as a major influence.

2013 - John Lennon and George Harrison

John Lennon and George Harrison were honoured with a blue plaque at the site of the former Apple Boutique in a ceremony in London held at at 94 Baker Street. The new plaque reads "John Lennon, M.B.E., 1940-1980, and George Harrison, M.B.E., 1943-2001, worked here."

The secret beneath Lincoln High School’s football field

The secret beneath Lincoln High School’s football field

If you’ve been to a football game or other events at Lincoln High School’s stadium, you probably didn’t realize that bicycle racers were zipping around that same location more than 80 years ago. Retired teacher and amateur historian Ed Hodges is working to change that. Last week, he gathered with a couple of other bicycle and history enthusiasts — Terry Shaw, Joe Halseth and Joe Wulftang — to…
