I genuinely think the reason so many people wanna be twitch streamers or YouTubers or tiktokers or whatever isn’t actually cause it’s easy or “your time is you own” or working from home or whatever (cause all the evidence shows it actually ruins giant chunks of your life; social life is gone, holidays are ruined by the expectation of making content, constant ordeal of being known, etc), but I think it’s actually the idea that you could maybe, maybe, be financially stable without having to actively oppress anyone else to get it. Maybe do something creatively fulfilling along the way, idk.
Like it genuinely haunts me that the options, often, are either to be poor and terrified of the next rent payment and skipping meals and have your money stress hovering over every single moment of your life for literally the rest of your fleeting time on earth and work more than your body can take and have it still not be enough, or to abandon your morals and impose that exact life on other people for your own well-being and financial stability. Especially with the steadily shrinking idea of being middle class.
Like with being a “”content creator”” you have to sell out for companies and whatever and that has its own discussion but it doesn’t feel the same as what it normally takes to be wealthy, which is at the expense of others lives and their families lives. When you’ve been poor, you have no interest or desire to do that to anyone. So the idea that streamers and YouTubers and content creators in general can make enough to pay for their lives without having to actively grind their boots into anyone else…idk. It’s appealing.
