Catra: I can’t believe I’m talking to a therapist. You know normally I’m not the touchy feely kind of person, but with this I just had to be a big enough person to admit that I needed help. Huh? I guess this is what growing up feels like.

when exactly did people start saying "end someone" rather than kill them? like what's the point of it? it seems to be quite popular and common in genre TV/movies, but it has this weird mincing-words vibe of wanting to make a death threat without using the word kill, yet it gets used in contexts and tones that imply it's as serious and powerful-sounding if not more so (like, outside of children's entertainment where the word "kill" is strictly rationed, not unlike the word "fuck" in movies trying to get a PG rating). I know this is going back to at least the early 2000s and I feel like it may have been, if not an original Whedonism, popularised by Joss Whedon (I know one of the major Firefly catchphrases is something like "I swear by my floral bonnet I will end you").

Just reflecting on this during the Stranger Things 3 recap before beginning, like, Stranger Things 4 Part 1 or whatever they're calling it. There's that scene where Billy, speaking for the Mind Flayer, tells Eleven, "We're going to end you, we're going to end your friends, and then we're going to end everyone." It's meant to be ultra-menacing and sinister but he doesn't just say kill. Like he's Azula or something, being forced by Nickelodeon Standards and Practices to say "I'm about to celebrate becoming an only child!"

#let azula say kill #for that matter let azula say fuck #although I think she'll get a lot more use out of kill #if you told Azula 'that's overkill' she'd be like 'why thank you! I tried'

I saw people hating Azula for not loving Iroh without taking a second to consider and condemn him for choosing to do the same to her. Seriously wth. She's a child and he's an adult therefore he should've known better why she's like this instead of brushing her off as a lost cause. And yet this fandom actually uses his line "she's crazy and she needs to go down" as some sort of scientific proof of why she's "beyond help". Iroh, of all people, should be the last one to condemn Azula. Because he was doing the same things as her if not worse.

Idk what kind of person Iroh was when he was Azula's age but I'm like 90% he was very similar to her. I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to erase every last bit of past him so that all people, including himself, would forget about what kind of person he used to be and what he used to do.

the bar is underground when it comes to people criticising Azula at this point

people can have complicated or negative relationships without it being a moral failing on either side. Azula not being willing to forgive Iroh and treat him lovingly doesn't make her a bad person, and Iroh not embracing Azula doesn't necessarily make him a bad person either. if you're not close to a family member, then you're not close. it doesn't mean you hate them or wish ill upon them. it literally just means you're not close.

we don't see any reason why Azula would feel close to Iroh. he was away fighting in Ba Sing Se, then he came back acting pathetic according to young!Azula, then left with Zuko for years. they never spent much time together, and their interactions clearly show us that neither of them really understood the other. again, that doesn't mean that they're bad people or that it's a moral failing. personally, i think they're so similar that they're distorted parallels of each other. when someone is like you but not quite, you see all the negatives and none of the positives.

Azula called Iroh pathetic for losing a battle and coming home crying. she later did the same thing. Iroh called her crazy, but he was called crazy himself and i'm sure anyone fighting on behalf of Ba Sing Se would also have said that he needed to go down. they mirror each other in the family and with their roles in the Fire Nation's imperialism.

i think most people forget that neither Azula nor Iroh are reliable narrators when it comes to their perceptions of others. no one is. Iroh's words aren't the be-all and end-all on whether Azula can change, and Azula's words aren't always accurate about Iroh either.

i love your point about Iroh trying to erase his past self, and that's exactly what i think he sees when he looks at Azula. he doesn't see her. he sees his mistakes. and when Azula looks at Iroh, she sees a future that she is desperately trying to avoid. her future.

In the Beach episode when Azula displays her firebending right in front of Chan, why doesn't he immediately recognize her as the Princess of the Fire Nation? Aren't the blue flames pretty much her trademark?

i would love to say that this is literally just Chan being so self-obsessed that he doesn't even notice or care, but another answer could be that Azula's blue fire isn't widely known outside the palace. we know she is powerful and that her blue flames are unique, but i can't remember ever hearing anyone mention this explicitly or describe her using her fire. even Zuko doesn't go "yeah watch out for my sister, the bender with the blue flames."

so Chan could be a himbo here or the royals could have just kept it in the inner circle

What made you gravitate towards Azula?

Hm, this is a great question :) My family watched Avatar over quarantine & I fell in love with the entire story & every character. The dangerous ladies were always going to be some of my favorite characters simply because scary capable lady badasses are always going to be some of my favorite characters. Bonus points for being morally ambiguous villains trapped in a mindset because of adults & not necessarily being truly evil. Extra bonus points for Azula for having lots of Mommy & Daddy issues AND being part of a pair of super fucked up dysfunctional siblings AND the scariest AND saddest villain of the show. She just checks all my boxes.

But those are the obvious reasons that as I was watching for the first time I latched onto Azula. If it was just those surface-level traits that I tend to enjoy in a character I would've moved on & become less obsessed by now. I'm still obsessed with Azula still writing fics & metas about her because I think there's endless untapped potential.

Right away when I finished the show with basically no contact with fandom I wanted to join fandom & read what other people thought about Azula & I wanted to start writing about her because canon really did leave her story feeling unfinished. I'll go against the grain from many fans & say I overall felt satisfied with Avatara's conclusion besides a few major issues that could have been easily solved (namely Zuko as Firelord but this post isn't about him so I won't get into that). I have nothing against tragic villains but in the end, we didn't even get to learn what HAPPENED to Azula & the fact that she was so tragic & in such a similar position to Zuko, Mai & Ty Lee who all got happy endings - I think we could've gotten something more hopeful with her. (Don't get me started on the comics). I would have been a thousand times happier if we just heard a side comment saying she's improving - maybe that Zuko had visited her & she's doing better - SOMETHING.

So - I'm always always gonna latch on when there's an untold story left at the end of a show & especially when there are aspects I was unhappy with.

Also though, she's a character that will just simply never be boring & because we mainly only got her at her most brainwashed & wicked & at her absolute mental breakdown - there's so much left to explore about this girl whose father burned her brother's face in front of her, who's mother abandoned her without a goodbye & whom she believed never loved her, who's friends betrayed her because they had no choice. The snippets we got in The Beach are some of my favorite moments because we get to see Azula trying to interact normally & it's both hilarious & devastatingly sad.

I'm in fandom for the theories & headcanons & alternate universes & fanfictions exploring the different directions you can go. There are SO many stories left to tell about Azula. She's a hypercompetent villain but she's also a child soldier who was traumatized both by the war & by her parents. She was betrayed by everyone she ever loved. She's a manipulative mastermind & she's also a socially awkward mess. I find her to be one of the most complicated & endlessly interesting fictional characters I've ever gotten into. There's so much I want to see - how would Azula interact with the gaang outside of combat? How could reuniting with her mother go? (we don't talk about the comics here) How could she unlearn her father's ideology? How would a romantic relationship look for someone like her? Could she & Zuko ever be close & learn to understand each other? How difficult could that be? There's so much we don't know & that it is so fun to imagine.

So, those are the reasons I'm drawn in & the reasons I'm still here talking about her :) I hope you enjoyed the accidental novel of rambling lmao I love Azula so much

For some reason all my fics have Azula as being 14 at the end of the show (meaning she's 13 at the start) which I think is incorrect. Debating whether to go back and change it in everything or whether that's too much work.

(If I do then thank whatever's out there for Ctrl-F.)

Where is Azula in DTR, anyway?

I finally have an answer for this!

At home, probably. After the war she was more or less exiled to one of the outer islands. It was a better option than putting her on trial for war crimes and crimes against Fire Nation citizens. Zuko visited as often as he could and provided her with the highest quality care that he could. They eventually reached a sort of reconciliation, although they were never close. Azula didn't even meet Izumi until she was almost an adult.

Azula remains on the island she's been exiled to, but she's built something of a found family for herself consisting of a hard-boiled aging maid who isn't intimidated by the princess; a soft-spoken stable hand, and his wife, Azula's cook, and their children to whom Azula eventually becomes a sort of gin auntie; and the neer do well child of a low ranking lord who has been semi-exiled, and with whom Azula has an on again off again romance.

By the time the story begins, I think Azula is still alive, but she's not invested enough in Zuko's life to insert herself into the sordid romance between him and the Avatar's Ex (she absolutely doesn't remember Katara's name). That's actually a shame because her friends would love to have the current gossip fresh from the source.

#atla#zutara #down the road and back again #down the road and back again comments #azula is alive! #but she is also probably not going to make an appearance in the story
