the bruce cant cook thing is so annoying bc like bruce is overprepared and probs learned basic survival skills like cooking in the off chance that hes in a situation without access to alfred/ anyone else who can cook, man can probs put together a edible, nutritional meal, whether he can be bothered to learn to make food taste good rather than just edible is the real question

this is my point exactly. but i personally believe the 'bruce cant cook' thing also points to a wider issue in fanon where flaws are disregarded and replaced by meaningless things like '[character] can't cook' or '[character] enjoys [insert food or other banal thing] very much'.

in a fic where bruce can't cook, or tim enjoys coffee more than life itself, or dick will fight anyone over his cereal, flaws like bruce's struggle with expressing himself emotionally, his not-so-good relationship with his kids, him pushing the people he loves away? all of these things are just not there. everything is perfect- except, oh yeah bruce can't cook.

it turns this group of people, this family, that is inherently dysfunctional and reduces them to very little and then goes 'aahhaha BUT he can't cook' and i despise that bc most people don't even do it intentionally, it's just common in the fandom so people just do it. without realising that it also kind of waters down their work.

where would u recommend starting if i want to get in to the comics?

a lot of the time reading comics is like throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. try to find some characters you already like and see what their 'best' runs are (some comic nerd will have a list ready to go at your disposal). read the writers and themes you enjoy, have complete and total disregard for what you don't enjoy and use fandom wiki or google if you don't know what's going on.

for the batman continuity i would just recommend stuff like batman: year one to get a taste for the character of batman. robin (1989) is fairly straightforward for tim. batgirl (2001) is fairly straightforward for cass. under the red hood is basically required reading at this point. robin and batman (2021) is great for getting into dick grayson. robin (2021) seems to be a really easy way to get to know damian's character and his family dynamics. batgirl volume 2 is the steph bible. red hood and the outlaws (rebirth) is pretty easy to get into and also introduces some characters that aren't just the batfam.

I have a headcanon that before Bruce stepped up to help financially, Jay and Barry would just steal food from shipping yards before it got to trucks. Their logic was that they did a lot of good for their communities by being fed and even if they weren't, it wasn't like anybody could catch them.

i feel like they'd be even more robin hood than that and just steal food from every person on the fortune 500 richest people in america list. they use a random number generator to find out whose gigantic wall sized fridge they're going to hit next.
