I know my taste in kdramas is not perhaps the mainstream so like
I am forever looking for more kdramas like: Strangers from Hell, My Country the New Age, Tomorrow
The Guest met that criteria (loved it), Beyond Evil was phenomenal, My Psychopath Diary was great, Crash Landing On You was and still is the only romance kdrama I loved to pieces (helped by a TON of great action and phenomenal ensemble Cast and Big plot about a lot more than just romance)
I tried My Crowned Clown which was close to a good fit for my tastes but a bit too slow moving/traditional plot in some ways for me (tho I liked the fake identity and lead character concept a lot and may eventually try and finish), The Kings Affection was just way too fluffy for me when I wanted grounded, Bulgasal is the closest to a good fit for me (I both love it and feel mixed just cause it's a very realistic take on my favorite genre when I'm used to my fave genre being a bit sillier like Tomorrow - but its still solid and I love the historical and present story and the horror/magic elements that is my JAM so I plan to finish it eventually), i hated Goblin so much despite the amazing premise of exactly what I like (magic in present day) because it's just sooooo fluffy among other things (and I'm just not big on mostly fluff/low action), I tried Tale of The Nine Tailed and it was okay and almost Horror enough to keep me but again just too fluffy for my tastes (and Tomorrow is fluffy too but like... tempers it with genuine death and fear and murderers and past lives and so it keeps a more up/down balance of fluffy to serious like Guardian does and Bureau of Transformer). Mmm I think my point is just... I would love to get into more kdramas but sometimes it's hard to find what will click with me in particular cause it's not always what's generally popular (especially because I can't do high fluff 95% of the time).
#rant #add onto that. i cannot usually focus long so 40 minutes is my limit so kdramas are a struggle #as is kinnporsche rn just cause dang hour eps #and then if anything is slow paced for more than like 2 hours? im quitting it. sorru i just cant do slow pacing #i do plan to check out Mr Queen for an actor i love and causr i love Go Princess Go #but comedy i can handle better than pure fluff #i am just. an action romance kinda dude what can i say #aside from Bulgasal i have not found mucj new stuff which vibes with me #Crash Landing on you i LOVED and if i could find more like that id be very happy ToT #i also. tend to like horror kdramas more but like. im also a chicken shdjdj #so they need some comedy or modern life friend bits to ground me (which beyond evil and The Guest do wooh) #but it means lol im still kinda a chicken when i see a horror kdrama sjdjd
Things in “Bulgasal: Immortal Souls” That Fuckin’ Broke Me
SPOILERS!!!
The sheer tenderness of the Bulgasal’s quiet little Monster Couple Cave Life
The gut-wrenching reveal that the curse that Hwal and all his loved ones have been living under for centuries was of his own making
Shaman Hye Suk being cruel in delivering and promoting her prophecies, but all of them being correct anyway
Hwal crying while burying his and Dan Sol’s stillborn baby
Hwal trying to spare his son from the curse by keeping him at arm’s length, only for his son to die thinking he hated him
Hwal refusing to connect with others for the better part of 600 years because everybody he’s ever loved has died because of his curse
Honestly Hwal’s entire life 600 years ago just tore my heart into tiny bleeding pieces
The cruelty (or wisdom) of fate making the people Hwal cursed reincarnate as his family and friends
And Hwal’s reaction every time he meets one of them
Hwal being so soft and careful around Si Ho
Hwal’s fear and guilt when he realizes Do Yoon is his reincarnated son
Hye Suk seeing Hwal as a father, an uncle, and a son throughout her life, and being able to see through his coldness
Sang Un being afraid of dark, confined spaces and Hwal helping her deal with it
Hwal claiming to not like Sang Un while literally tending her wounds, cleaning the blood out of her hair, stroking her face, making her food…
Everybody becoming a little found family together despite 1000 years of bad fate between them, only for their found family to still be crushed by that bad fate
Hwal not realizing that he saw Hye Suk as his daughter until she’s already dead, and hating himself for not treating her as one
Hwal being in such suffocating grief over Hye Suk’s death that he tries to stab himself to make it hurt less
So many tragedies and misunderstandings happening just because Eul Tae spent 1000 years lying like it was his fucking job
Sang Un rescuing Hwal from drowning at the reservoir just like she did in the frozen lake when he was a child
Sang Un stabbing Hwal through the hand 1000 years ago, and Hwal later taking a knife to the hand to save her
Detective Kwon being the one who made Hwal promise not to drink human blood 600 years ago, but then giving Hwal his lifeblood to save him
Hwal calling Detective Kwon “father” as Detective Kwon dies
THE VISUALS OMFG
Hwal and Sang Un both admitting to feeling incomplete without each other even before learning that they were literally created as two halves of a whole
Hwal and Sang Un both desperately clinging to a humanity/soul that wasn’t theirs in the first place, while Eul Tae violently rejects it
The obsessiveness seemingly inherent to Bulgasal: Eul Tae’s obsession with Hwal, Hwal’s obsession with Sang Un, Sang Un’s obsession with the children
The final confrontation happening where everything began, in the Bulgasal cave
Hwal and Sang Un thinking they started as enemies, only to realize that they were literal soulmates divided by obsession and vengeance
Hwal getting all his memories back and, instead of continuing the cycle of retribution, choosing the values and lessons he learned as a human and killing himself to end the curse
Hwal saying he never should have met Sang Un again but admitting that he doesn’t want to leave her now that he has
Sang Un starting out the series on a mission to kill Hwal, and sixteen episodes later sobbing as he dies in her arms
Hwal’s house as a metaphor for found family and redemption: being abandoned and filthy and falling apart at the beginning, but becoming a haven after everyone moves in (against his will)
And then Si Ho and Do Yoon keep and protect it after everybody else dies, trusting that the new cycle of good karma will bring their loved ones back to the home they built together
Si Ho and Do Yoon being the only ones of the seven who didn’t contribute to the cycle of retribution, and being the only ones who survive its reckoning
Hwal and Sang Un each making opposite choices at the beginning and end of the story: Hwal originally being so possessive of Sang Un that he destroyed everything they both loved, but ultimately letting her go to save her and end the curse; and Sang Un originally abandoning Hwal for the human children, but, a millennia later, choosing to stay by his side to the end
Hwal reincarnating against all odds because Sang Un does, and the two of them being drawn together yet again but this time without any grief or rage between them, just familiarity, kindness, and a new start after 1000 years
Ok bulgasal ep 1 thoughts: there were a bunch of nice shots and the idea of the story is interesting. But the main character and main antagonist(idk how to define the woman) are giving me absolutely nothing. Like emotionless protags don't appeal to me unless you really dig into the thing that compels them. And the answer is usually still 'an emotion they don't know how to categorize' and that takes really nuanced acting that I do not think the lead possesses.
#mine #also i feel like this show is women hating #it's just the first ep tho so there is time to recover! #bulgasal
What are the projects your working on currently and what are some future ones?
that is a great question, anon! it's a bit hard to answer to some degree as i have many unfinished fics that are waiting to be updated that i want to finish but lacking the motivation/ideas to do so...
my main interests at the moment are ghostwire: tokyo and bulgasal: immortal souls, but i haven't abandoned any of my other fandoms, they're just lower down my list of priorities at the moment :)
but in terms of what i'm currently interested/motivated to write, and working on as we speak:
Broken Mask - finishing off the last chapter,
Kitsune!KK AU - finishing off the first chapter,
In Spite Of Our Fate - chapter three and general future chapter planning,
Rising From Dust - final chapter, and then the one-shot sequel, which will finish the series,
a very dark one-shot of a certain ship from tale of the nine tailed.
after that, some future projects that would be up next include:
the blind!Akito AU,
the merman!KK AU,
an omega!KK one-shot,
a few more one-shots for the lending a hand series!
i have about 50 other fics and WIPs to work on other than that so there's definitely no shortage :P
I love how the moment Dan Hwal decides to not kill Sang Un the whole costume department went like f*ck the theme we are going to clothe him in this bright blue shirt and then exchange it with this beautiful purple shirt
Thank you for asking, anon! Let's see... Haven't had a chance to do any work this week but currently off the top of my head:
Finishing up last chapter of Broken Mask.
Finishing up chapter one of Kitsune!KK AU.
Planning chapter one of Blind!Akito AU.
Planning chapter three of In Spite Of Our Fate.
Half-way through the sequel one-shot to Rising From Dust.
I've also spent about 20 hours on a drawing of Akito that I really hope to finish soon but I'm shit at colouring so its taking forever 😔 but at least it gives me something to do in between writing things.
So yeah, hope to have at least the first or second thing listed here done in the next week, but I'll see how I go 😌🙏
akina's misfortune begins with her birth . when she didn't cry in her mother's arms , the clan knew there was something wrong with the baby . growing up , they realized they were right , apparently ; the kid was wandering around the lake late at night , whispering something to the water , swimming . the same lake they had warned the whole clan about , calling it wicked and cursed , but akina let her black locks float on the surface , let the water sink her deep and bring her back to surface . around the age of eighteen , the suspicion had filled the hearts of everyone in the village . they called her a yokai , a siren , sometimes , especially when men started a rumor that she was bewitching them ! they're loyal and they're kind husbands , but akina mori was simply a witch , who can say no to a witch ?
one early spring morning . it was bright and cool , the water felt cold around her , but akina had never been bothered by it since she was born . when the prince approaches her , and mindlessly ignores her glares , akina drowns him . fear was all she felt , fear , her hands trembled , she's came out of water and put on her clothes with tears in her eyes . her family would be just as frightened as she is , she knew , but in that moment , all she wanted was to run home and ask them to hide her , to hold her . the prince laid blue and breathless on the surface of water as akina rushed toward the trees , to the village . it was useless to ask anyone , even osamu , her father to hide him . finding the prince's corpse in the same lake that only akina mori swam inside was enough of an evidence to finally kill the girl . when akina was awakened by the screams of people outside her house , again , the first thing she wanted to do was to run to her parents ; only they were gone . the house was empty and dark , save for the light of angry flames that people were holding .
they catch her near the lake , an arrow , two , three . and she fell . thin trail of blood down her cheek , facing the sky and not moving anymore . the village believed they were freed from the curse . after two nights , after they burned her , a carnival was their excuse of celebrating the siren's death . the colors , the music , the fireworks . she was forgotten almost too quickly , remembered as a curse upon kin-tora that was now vanished , the gods have forgiven them . . .
it started with a quiet giggle . in their heads , it was a whisper and they couldn't even hear their own laughter in the loud music of the carnival . but the soft laughter of a woman was ringing in their ears . then a shadow on the walls , too tall to belong to a human , too dark , too black . when the king ordered the music to stop , they finally see the thin figure standing near their carnival area . it looked like it was a woman , dressed in deep crimson , a pair of white eyes . water dropping from the tips of her fingers . someone whispered her name , ' akina ' , and another , and another . it was sudden , it was fast, her grinning face as sweet as the day she died . beautiful even , flashing in front of eyes , killing , slitting throats with her bare claws . the fire had taken all their village , flames going to the sky , as akina stood above a pile of corpses and ashes . for some reason she didn't bother trying to find her father , her mother .
akina is immortal in this verse but she can be killed ; by getting stabbed in the three scars that she got when she died . one is on her left shoulder , other between her ribs lower than her breasts , the last one on the left side of her stomach .
abilities ; enhanced speed and strength , waterbending , mind reading , can be invisible when she's in the water , doesn't have to eat ( likes drinking blood sometimes , again she doesn't have to ) , high pain tolerance .
her lungs burn when she's angry ; also her eyes glow white and black veins appear under her eyes . as any other monster , her blood is black .
#𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐒. : 04. bulgasal / yokai #just gotta have this here too ok #edits.
So I have this idea on my mind for quiet long time. Where Eul Tae is soon to be a King, and Hwal is his cousin from his father marriage with his concubine. Both are in love but the Queen, demand Eul Tae to marry Shi Ho, and would do anything for that. I'm not good at writing XD, maybe you will write fanfic from this prompt :D
oh! thank you, i've never received a bulgasal request before! :D
i've been thinking about this request all morning, it could make for a very interesting AU! i've got a few ideas which i've written down for now, but i'd love to come back to this once my three other HwalTae fics are written and finished :)
thanks so much for sending me the prompt! you're more than welcome to send any more my way as i do really love this ship, and it doesn't get nearly the amount of fanfiction and love that it deserves! :D
Hwal emerged from the well, feeling his skin crawl as a shiver ran down his spine. He stopped in his tracks as his nose began to bleed, blood trailing down to his lip.
An all-too familiar growl echoed in the distance; as a dark, red-eyed form emerged from shadows, heading towards him.
No-- it wasn’t possible--
Hwal found himself face to face with Bulgasal-- only, this time... it wasn’t Sang-un.
