Summary: Never in Dance's life did he ever think that he'd fall for a landdweller. But then Lust brought one back home.
Never in his life had Dance ever expected to fall for a landdweller. At least, not until his beautiful mate dragged one back home. And even then, he hadn’t been impressed by the roguish monster - savior or no. The landdweller - Red - was loud and brash. He was ignorant of the ways of merkind and shocked by Dance’s intelligence. Worse yet, the landdweller was dead weight - even more so since he was injured. His only saving grace was that - somehow - Red could breathe underwater. Still, a life debt is a life debt and Lust would be upset if Dance kicked Red out to the mercies of the ocean.
The first week together was horrible. At the best of days, Dance tolerated the landdweller’s presence. At the worst, they were constantly at each other’s metaphorical throats. The only thing that they had in common was how much they adored Lust.
But then…something gave and they finally saw eye-to-eye. To this day, Dance still can’t put his finger on what it was. Either way, the animosity between them broke and they started to build a positive relationship with each other.
As much as it smarted his pride to acknowledge it, Dance quickly saw why Lust fell head-over-fins for Red. Yes, the monster was brash and rude at times, but he was also honorable and loyal. His compassion for merkind even before he realized their higher intelligence was admirable.
Yes, it’s easy to fall for Red.
While Dance would usually stew in denial about his feelings until it was time for Red to return to his own kind, Dance’s upcoming heat made it…difficult. In the end, he decided that properly courting Red before the season completely took his senses was the least humiliating direction to go. At worst, Lust’s landdweller would awkwardly but not unkindly reject him and he’d have Lust to lick his wounds and ease his broken heart.
And so, Dance brought Red out to the most beautiful area near their home and courted him. He swam circles around the landdweller, dancing for Red with all his soul. He crooned melodies and left tentative yet heated touches.
When Red didn’t reject him, his soul soared. Instead, he grabbed him and took Dance’s breath away with a burning kiss. It was the consuming type that Dance had jealously witnessed him exchanging with Lust from time to time.
“Beautiful,” Red called him and in that moment, Dance decided that he wasn’t going to let the landdweller leave them. Ever.
As if summoned by Dance’s possessive thoughts, Lust revealed himself and wrapped his arms around Red. He flashed his colorful fins and nuzzled the landdweller’s neck. Between both of their affections, Red was helpless.
“Be ours,” Dance pleaded earnestly. “Spend the season with us.”
At the dazed yet dopey expression on Red’s face, Dance knew that answer was “yes”.
