Movie Name:Rocky
Director:Arun Matheswaran
If there was one director who managed to keep the audience intrigued for nearly a year with the trailer of his first film, it is Arun Matheswaran. After Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara came onboard as presenters for Arun's Rocky, the expectations grew manifold. And after a year, Rocky hit the theatres on December 23.
Rocky is unabashedly gruesome - just as the trailer and the promos promised. The violence is brutal, yet poetic. Now, this is a balance that is extremely difficult to achieve. But, Arun Matheswaran does it successfully. Still, we must add that Rocky is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Rocky follows the story of Rocky (Vasanth Ravi) and Manimaran (Bharathiraja). Rocky works for Manimaran and an ego clash between them results in a series of deaths. From the word go, Rocky is interesting, as Arun Matheswaran keeps the audience guessing as to what Rocky's past is. We are shown that Rocky spent 17 years in jail for a brutal murder and is now looking to find his family. While he gets to know that his mother Malli (Rohini) is dead because of his actions, his sister Amudha (Raveena Ravi) is missing.
Rocky starts searching for Amudha, and finally meets her chasing a tip. He is now a changed man and doesn't want to get trapped in violence. But, an untoward incident pushes Rocky into it again, and then it is just a downward spiral.
Rocky's screenplay is just like reading a novel. We have a prologue, multiple chapters exploring the protagonist and antagonist's lives and an epilogue as well. The revenge drama often talks about how time plays an important factor in Rocky and Manimaran's lives. When Rocky is in jail, time stops for him. When he steps out, he carries a watch that his mom gifted for his dad.
Rocky is not a plain revenge drama, it is layered and carefully structured. From revealing crucial plot points at frequent intervals to showcasing violence in a no-holds-barred manner, Rocky is out there. In a corridor fight scene, we see Vasanth Ravi's Rocky killing over 20 goons in a gruesome way. Music director Darbuka Siva uses mridangam and tabla to add background score. Now that's a fight scene that is done tastefully!
Vasanth Ravi doesn't show many expressions. He doesn't flinch when he slashes someone's throat or pokes someone's eyes out. His eyes do the talking. Bharathiraja as Manimaran also delivered an exceptional performance.
But, it is Arun Matheswaran's screenplay and Shreyaas Krishna's extraordinary cinematography that take the cake. Every single frame is lit up to perfection. So much so, that you would want to just see the visuals with a nice instrumental score playing in the background without any dialogue.
Rocky's climax is goosebumps-inducing, literally. It is then that you get a sense of the business that Manimaran and Rocky are involved in. The emotional sequences featuring Rocky's family members make the concept intriguing.
The only grouse we have with Rocky is that there are so many gruesome murders happening, but there is not one police officer in sight.
Rocky is a leaf out of the John Wick universe, but Indian style.
