Reinforce actions to conserve the Great Barrier Reef.

“The extent to which climate change has damaged the World Heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef is unprecedented, and there is a significant risk that areas of the reef repeatedly affected by bleaching may not be able to recover,” says Tim Badman, Director of IUCN’s World Heritage Programme. “We must redouble efforts both at global, national and local levels to address the significant threats the reef is facing from climate change, poor water quality and other pressures. We stand ready to help Australia reinforce its actions to conserve this most iconic site for future generations.”

Card of the Day - The World (Gaia) - Sunday, May 22, 2022

Card of the Day – The World (Gaia) – Sunday, May 22, 2022

The journey known as life is full of cycles, doors, and even the occasional portal into an entirely new realm. Mercury retrograde continues its backward trek, returning to the sign of Taurus today, an energy which is much singularly focused. It is up to you to use this focus to achieve some form of success. Some may view this as things going in the wrong direction, but perhaps you need to tie up…

So the other day I heard one of the commercials for Jurassic World: Dominion and I hear

    “Humans are looking at extinction”

It’s 8 billion people vs a couple thousand dinosaurs, I think we’ll be fine

#jurassic world #jurassic world dominion #every time I'm tempted to watch this movie I am reminded of the terrible writing quality of the jw films #at most they'd cause some ecological havoc until they were either captured or killed #and most of them are released in the US #y'know #where everyone has guns? #yes I would totally panic at a raptor in my yard but we also have shotguns #I just #the more I stare at these movies the less sense they make #it's like kingdom hearts #salt maybe?

‘Despair is paralysis. It robs us of agency. It blinds us to put own power and the power of the earth. Environmental despair is a poison every bit as destructive as the methylated mercury in the bottom of Onondaga Lake. But how can we submit to despair while the land is saying “Help”?

Restoration is a powerful antidote to despair. Restoration offers concrete means by which humans can once again enter into positive, creative relationships with the more-than-human world, meeting responsibilities that are simultaneously material and spiritual. It’s not enough to grieve. It’s not enough to just stop doing bad things.’

Shiny-ness tends to be a disadvantage in Pokemon, not helping with camouflage ect...but are there any Pokemon who actually benefit from their Shiny forms? Such as their different colours attracting mates, or being better camouflage, etc.?

Awesome question! This is a great example of a classic evolutionary conundrum that many species face: how to balance attracting a mate to increase fitness while also avoiding attracting predators/alerting prey with flashy ornaments. Since, after all, starving or being eaten is a pretty surefire way to decrease fitness... unless you've already secured a mate. There are many species that have pushed past the threshold of "remain reasonable and demure" and have opted for a still-successful life cycle strategy of "go out with a bang" (pun intended). Many bird Pokémon may especially benefit from being Shiny with respect to this, as their mate selection process is already highly dependent on visual cues. It means that even if an individual has less than optimal genes for bright natural coloration, they may make up for that by being Shiny. This of course is dependent on the Shiny variation in color not being so extremely different from the standard that potential mates no longer recognize the Shiny Pokémon in question.

Conversely, Pokémon whose natural histories involve indiscriminate reproduction, like broadcast spawning, are pretty adversely impacted by Shininess. This includes many non-mammalian aquatic Pokémon.

And furthermore, there is some speculation that Shininess may constitute a mechanism for warning signaling; i.e. telling a potential predator that they might be poisonous (whether or not that's actually true). This is called aposematism, and the idea certainly holds water from most angles. However, aposematic species normally have to be able to put their money where their mouths are, so to speak, every now and again to remind predators just what those signals mean. This means that if they themselves are not dangerous to eat, they must resemble another species that is... and this isn't the case for all Shiny Pokémon. But that doesn't mean that it has not, or will not ever be a potential positive consequence.

Considering the recent increase in popular interest in Shiny Pokémon, there will hopefully be more studies done on their ecologies. I would personally be really interested to know how the presence of a Shiny Pokémon impacts the sustainability of its population as well as their broader community.

[On the political and economic history of Hurricane Katrina:]

“Whether we want to undo what has been done (e.g., destroying or altering levees) or do something else (e.g., ‘managed retreat’ from the waters), we will have to execute either choice with hands, feet, and shovels - not with recognition or symbolism. We will have to change the distribution of wealth, of housing, and of water, not of apologies or memorials. We have to decide what to do from here: where to fortify and what to abandon, whether or not to flee, what to build and rebuild, whom to protect.

There’s a larger lesson here. A politically serious reparations project - at least one fitting the goals and ethos of the constructive view - must focus on climate justice. Everywhere is New Orleans” (157).

If you commute everyday by sitting alone in your car when there are alternatives such as taking public transit, biking, or carpooling that are available near your home and your workplace, you don't get to bitch about the gas prices wth

This especially applies to you if you drive a big ass car that is empty 99.9% of the time

#People are so lazy #No I want to be in my little cubicle and take up all the space on the road with the other drivers 😠😠😠 #For the idiots out there : #This only applies to people who live in places where those alternatives are available #And to people who only use their car to go from home to school/work/supermarket/etc #This does not apply to people who NEED a car to be able to do their job properly #I live in the suburbs and all I see when I bike or take the bus/train to go to the city is people alone in their HUGE empty cars #Also cars are so big for no reasons??? #Like the majority of cars that I see are empty commuter cars #I get that they can have kids and that having a 5 seats car is useful when you go on holidays but like.. #It would cost less money (gas insurance etc) to just rent a big car for the few times a year when you need one?? #Also Gas has a short shelf life #If less people used their fucking cars gas prices would go doooooown #Like they did during covid #Ecology#Eco-friendly#Cycling#Commuting#Green living#Stop polluting #Yes im aware that big corporations also pollute a fuck ton
