When Ennie entered his apartment he would hear the beginnings of a squabble, though petty in nature as the source revealed themselves to be his two lovers, both seated on the couch with Gundham holding Kazuichi’s chin in an effort to make him hold still while he tried to do his makeup. “My paramour, please cease your squirming, you are making this much more difficult than what is required.”

Kaz just huffed, trying again to pull his face away, it only really making his cheeks squish in Gundham’s vice like hold. “Fucking make me! You’re the one who’s making me redo it! It looked- Uh...” He ended up trailing off as Gundham climbed into his lap, effectively shutting him up and keeping him still in one swift motion. With that Gundham was able to finish rather quickly, placing a kiss to Kazuichi's lips in reward before getting up, only to turn and see Ennie, his eyes lighting up at the sight of him. “Ah, dear heart, I was wondering when you would return. We are endeavoring to-”

“We’re going to the Cockring!” Kazuichi shouted from the couch, having fully recovered from the flustering experience he was just forced to be a part of. Popping up from his seat to stand beside Gundham, eyeliner now done in perfect wings, very unlike the usual messy smudge he did it in, he grinned up at Ennie with bright, shining eyes, much like the glitter that was dotted across his cheeks like shimmering freckles. “You wanna come?” Gundham just sighed at the interruption with a fond smile, giving a roll of his eyes as he turned his attention back to Ennie as he awaited an answer.

Climbing on my horse I searched the camp seeing Ennis was down by the riverside. The wind blows my hair as I ride through the grass trying to rack my brain around what my papa would do to him once he knew. Papa had a rule that none of the boys riding with us were to fall for me or my sister Elsa. "Ennis, I gotta tell you something." I called out to him climbing down my horse wearing some of my papa's clothes instead of dresses like my mama wants.

"What ya gotta say, Y/n?" He asked tipping his hat up sitting in the grass beside his horse. Sitting down beside him I tuck some hair behind my ear grabbing his right hand in mine. "I got sick this mornin'. My mama taught me what that means and I understand if you'd wanna-" He cuts me off gently kissing me on the lips not letting me finish my sentence. Leaning my head against his I kissed back for a second waiting for a reaction different than this. "You ain't gonna run because of my papa?"

Ennis shakes his head cupping my face in his hands smiling. I mirror his expression feeling the heavy weight off my shoulders. "Your papa scares me yes indeed. But I - I love you. So I'll run away with you if that's what it takes." Throwing my arms around his neck his hat falls off his head when he fell on his back wrapping his arms around my waist. Pressing my lips to his I mumbled when he kissed back. "I love you too, Ennis and so will this child of ours." He smiled drawing me in for another kiss leaving the worry of my papa in the past.

Five. With a dirty right hook to the cheek, angrier than all hell at the universe, at Jack and, more importantly, at himself; for it ending, for letting it have begun at all.

Four. With a kiss, desperate and greedy-like, that could've swallowed Jack up whole, letting him sink all the way down to rediscover the home he'd built up within him that one fateful summer; pulling away not out of fear but for a breath, just long enough to whisper what he hoped was enough to close up the four long years and too many miles of distance laid out between them: "Little darlin'."

Three. With a hard stare fixed on the flames, the ever-present reminder of the hellfire that awaited them at the end of their journeys dancing in his irises, taunting him, trying hard to find the words to balm up and soothe the harsh sting of rejection he'd doled onto his poor, sweet, naïve lover: "There ain't no reins on this one," – the closest he'd ever come to saying what he meant.

Two. With heavy brows and a heavier heart, watching helplessly as the spaces between his words broke at yet another piece of the heart that Jack had driven all this many miles to gift to him, his dark eyes pleading with Jack, trying hard to get him to understand I don’t want ya ta go, don’t never want ya ta go, but only managing a pitiful purse of lips and the solemn hang of his coward head. “I'm sure as hell sorry. You know I am.”

One. With fourteen days of unbridled joy and three hundred and fifty-one of rampant sorrow, give or take, endured only by the thought that she kept him safe, that he was keeping him safe. Wasn't he?

Instead, silence that had always cauterized the wounds between them finally gave way to the words that usually failed him when they were actually needed, exposing twenty long years of festering anguish to the elements at the foot of the very mountains where those hurts had first appeared. The sound of death, of a love finally succumbed to sepsis came in the form of a shuddering breath, a choked sob, and with four words he'd regret until the day he met Jack again lying in his own cold, hard grave:

Description: Sure, Ennis is used to loss. You think he’d be ready for the emptiness that inevitably follows it, too.

It throws him for a loop, that void that came with the loss, his loss, and it’s often when he least expects it.

It hits him in the bottoms of amber bottles of whiskey, the way it lingers on his breath like a kiss come the morning; with glimpses of black Stetsons and the bucking of the black bulls he wrangles; in the calendars he has no more need to buy and when an old habit keeps him waiting without anything to wait for; and whenever he dared stare up into the deep blue Wyoming sky, the heavens only rivaled in color and beauty by a pair of eyes that only exist within his dreams anymore.

Ennis is used to loss, though. You think he’d be used to the emptiness that follows, too.

Lost his dog when he was four; would've spent the whole night hollering out in the rain, catching his death of cold had K.E. not hauled his ass back inside, kicking and screaming.

Lost his mom and dad to a half bottle of whiskey and a single curve in a long, dark stretch of road.

Lost his ranch and horses when the bank came. It wouldn't be the last time, though, and that hurt never lessened.

Lost ten whole years to a marriage. The time had flown and he'd never stopped to let himself see it off, because to take notice of all that had slipped past his fingers would only hurt more.

Lost ten whole years of a marriage. Then again, this one he didn't mind losing as much.

Lost contact with his daughters, a burning shame that never let him believe he was any better than his own daddy for letting it happen.

Lost his sense of wonder the day he stared into a pair of lifeless eyes and realized, with horror most rendering, that it was himself who stared back. Innocence had indeed died twice on that hot, unassuming day.

Sure, Ennis is used to loss. You think he’d be ready for the emptiness that inevitably follows it, too.

But then again, he'd never had to lose himself before, either.
