Digging Into Soil Biology Recovery After Petroleum Contamination

Digging Into Soil Biology Recovery After Petroleum Contamination

Newswise — May 25, 2022 – Spills and leaks of petroleum products wreak havoc on the environment. They can contaminate soils and pose significant threats to humans, animals, plants, and soil microbes. Cleaning up petroleum contamination can be energy and time-consuming, however, one of the fastest methods of decontaminating soils is called thermal desorption. “The goal of soil reclamation is to…

Where do ‘Hawaiian box jellies’ come from? — ScienceDaily

An insightful cross-disciplinary team of University of Hawai’i (UH) at Manoa researchers, working for over a decade, published a study recently revealing that a key number of hours of darkness during the lunar cycle triggers mature “Hawaiian box jellyfish” (Alatina alata) to swim to leeward O’ahu shores to spawn. Led by Angel Yanagihara, associate research professor at the UH Manoa School of…

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration rejected a petition to ban all phthalates in food packaging

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration rejected a petition to ban all phthalates in food packaging

Phthalates are found in products throughout the food production chain, from conveyor belts and plastic tubes in manufacturing plants, to gloves used during food preparation, to food packaging containers, such as the lining in some milk cartons and juice boxes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn permission to use 23 specific types of phthalates in food packaging and processing on…

Hey friends i know not many of yall will see this post but I just want to talk about whats been going on in my life lately.

I have been fighting severe depression and anxiety that has gotten worse because of my dad’s declining mental state. He is not choosing to get help for his mental illness, and this has put a strain on our family. Its been really hard trying to live with his difficult behaviors. He has greatly affected my self image and identity for all of my life. I realize now how much he has hurt me and my family.

I am graduating from highschool soon, and I have learned a lot of life things in these past years. Many bad things that had happened to me were not all my fault, I was not some horrible person that brought negativity and harm to the people I loved. It was not my fault that I developed mental disorders that severely impacted my physical health. Extreme fear and guilt ruled my life for so long, but now I know that many of the traumatic things that have happened to me were greatly outside of my control. I am learning to let go of this guilt and learning to be a kinder, forgiving person.

I think over the next few months I will gradually stop posting, because I really want to seek professional help for my issues and family relationships. Also I want to spend as much time learning what makes me happy to be alive. I want to learn more about my hobbies and interests, because that really helps me with my depression.

Take care, my friends, I will see you when I feel stronger and healthier! May health and happiness find you wherever you go.

#sorry if this sounds too formal or weird i like typing like this #also sorry if this is completely out of the ordinary i try to not be too personal on here #but uh yeah #i think im gonna take a break from social media so i can focus on adult things #like getting a job and figuring out my career path #which will likely be something to do with entomology or environmental science #aris art#ari talks #vent? #mental health talk #also dats me in da drawing

    Flavoparmelia baltimorensis

    Rock greenshield lichen

Back from vacation and back on my lichen bullshit! This foliose lichen has smooth, yellow-green lobes dotted with pustules across the upper surface. The lower surface is brown-black, with simple, black rhizines.  It produces small, pustule-like, brown-disked apothecia. F. baltimorensis grows on acidic rock in eastern and SW North America.

Newly discovered Amazonian fish are already threatened

Two new colorful species of fish have been found in Brazil's Amazon Basin -- and they are already at risk of disappearing due to extinction.

The fish belong to a subfamily called South American darters. The discovery brings the known number of darter species to five.

One species, Poecilocharax callipterus, is distinguished by its long, striking red-orange fins and a dark spot at the base of its tail.

The other new species, Poecilocharax rhizophilus is the most miniature darter ever identified. This tiny fish only measures about three-quarter inch (2 centimeters) in length as a mature adult. It's bright yellow with a black stripe along its flanks and has a silver to white belly.

A study describing the two new species, and threats to their environment, published Monday in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Deforestation and other human impacts are pushing the Amazon rainforest toward a tipping point that would turn the biologically rich, diverse ecosystem into a grassy savanna -- and those stressors can be felt beneath the water's surface as well as above it.

Study author Murilo Pastana, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, and his colleagues saw evidence of this during their expeditions between 2015 and 2016.

"It was exciting to find new species," Pastana said. "But in the field, we saw the forest on fire, logging trucks carrying out huge trees, and cleared patches turned into cattle pasture. This made us feel a lot of urgency to document these species and publish this paper as quickly as possible."

One of my biggest issues in science fiction is when there's so much cool lore and potential but it was ruined by White Man Writing.

    Let me give some examples.

The concepts in the Dune series are really cool. Humans use limited tech thanks to a robot revolution many centuries before. So instead of machine computers, they use living systems to solve complex equations.

That is fucking rad as hell.

But then it gets ruined by the story's political systems.

The reason there's an Emperor and royalty in these books is because Frank Herbert was a libertarian who believed that it humanity's nature was to always exist in a Vassal state.

    Uh excuse me? The fuck.

And some might argue "but Paul becomes Emperor at the end and brings peace".

The issue isn't who is in charge but what system is used.

Avatar is also another great example.

Pandora is an amazing feat of creativity. From the floating mountains to the mycorrhizal network so complex it literally has a mind of its own.

So then why does the movie suck so bad?

Because James Cameron is the same asshole who nearly let Kate Winslet freeze to death and called it method acting.

So instead of a story about this fanatastic world, we get Pocahontas In Space.

Maybe it's just because im a star trek person.

Where humanity learns from their mistakes and goes out to learn and explore, not conquer.

Where they ask nicely if they can use local resources and are sure to offer the locals anything they like in return.

Where people from other worlds can chose to travel the stars or live as their ancestors did and both are seen as equal options.

Anyway here's some cool links on new amazing and ethical scientific breakthroughs:

    Mining without digging

Mushrooms and bacteria that eat plastic

Artificial womb video (still just a theory but neat) plus the current science

    Forest cities

    Mushroom computers

same anon because i’m just as excited as you ahdhsjjfjs clouds are my earliest special interest that i can remember, i used to have this one book that talked about various nature things and i stared at the full-spread pages of cloud classification for So Long Every Day, it was my favorite book!! i never stopped loving clouds and knowing their names and knowing what they say about atmospheric conditions. i almost majored in meteorology, but it requires SO much physics and bestie i cannot do physics…… i’m doing environmental science instead, so i get to learn about climate stuff without the math. i just ajfkjsjfjs CLOUDS you get it you get it.

that’s awesome !!!! i thinks it great that you're pursuing something you've loved your whole life :DD i’ve never actually taken a physics class but i’m so bad at most science stuff even though i think it’s super cool 😭😭 it’s such a struggle

#one time some of my friends did a like. 10 hour math marathon thing where they got handed a packet of like. 5 insanely difficult questions #and had to use textbooks and math theory books and their prior knowledge to have #ANY damn clue how to solve those problems !!! and it literally seemed so fun bc it wasn’t just formulas and functions it was like #figuring stuff out from the ground up and that’s the kinda science and math and shit i love !!! that type of reasoning is so cool im so jea #-lous 😭😭😭 its genuinely so cool you’re studying environmental science like legitimately awesome !!! i hope you’re enjoying school ! #anyways. idk who you are but if u want to talk abt your super specific cloud knowledge im willing to talk and also insanely forgetful any #knowledge baby me had has been. Lost. idk where it went #🌸.asks
