Festus Adedayo Chinua Achebe’s Tortoise folktale in his highly celebrated Things Fall Apart, among other motifs, excoriates an act of betrayal as evil. In having Ekwefi, one of his characters, narrate the proverbial cunning and treachery of the Tortoise to her daughter Ezinma, Achebe attempted to paint a moral canvass suggestive of the fact that traitors always take fatal leaps that eventually…

    Things Fall Apart

Such a feeling of discomfort you are enveloped by. The stifling currents of patriarchy threaten to inundate not only Okonkwo's wives and daughters but also tend to surface in the modern person's mind in moments of unconsciousness or anger. The tussle between the white men of Church and the self-righteous men of Umuofia sometimes appears to be absurd because of the minimal levels of logic and high levels of passionate hostility, but if you think deeper, such affairs are not inconsistent even in modern times. The setting changes, but the colonial paradigms stay very much the same.

Achebe does not paint a glorious past or native culture for the advantageous sake of African nationalists. It is not so simple, that is certain. Okonkwo is a living repertoire of problematic and discriminatory attitudes, but he is one of the strongest, most respected, and most powerful leaders in his community. I was rooting for Ikemefuna, he seemed like a promising youngster. But Okonkwo broke my heart, as he did with his treatment of his son Nwoye, who ultimately took a decision similar to Okonkwo in his youth - knowingly wanting to escape the father's overbearing shadow, whether he be too lazy or too proactive, and this inter-generational conflict is only too well-known in our times.

I also really wished for a development of Ezinma's character, but Achebe pays as much respect to her as she is meant to be accorded in her misogynist community. Bound by the ancient wisdom of proverbs and the regular cycles of toiling to cultivate staple crops, occasionally gathering together to drink pots of palm wine, making marriage proposals or fighting in ritual combats, Umuofia is a tight-knit society tied down both by its traditional past and its colonial present and future. A very disillusioned and real portrayal of how things fall apart the most from its internal dialectics of instability which shows how the "ceremony of innocence is drowned".

    Release Radar

So, I am attempting to pay attention to my New Release playlist on Spotify, and what better way than to make notes on the ones that catch my ear? ~ "INVISIBLE" by Duran Duran was a wonderful treat to find. Very much the band's typical style. ~ "West End girls - New lockdown version" by Pet Shop Boys is actually a really great remix. ~ "Our House" covered by The Head and the Heart (Yes, Madness's song) was also a treat to find. ~ "Walls" by Dawes featuring Mike Viola proves to me that Dawes really hits my melodic needs. ~ "Body Language" by Blake Shelton featuring the Swon Brothers is a return to classic Blake sound that I can enjoy. ~ "Demons" covered by 2Cellos was amazeballs. ~ "Wolves" by Garbage is good... but something about it hits my Shakespear's Sister ear. More the vocals, as the music is undeniably Garbage. ~ "Bobby and the Rat-Kings" by Counting Crows was a surprise, bit pointed in ways. ~ "Love Me Like You Used To" by Lord Huron is very typical their sound, but easy on my ears... which is why I love them. ~ "Pollyanna" by Green Day... bit more cheerful song from them for a change, and nice to hear. ~ "Sunday Birmingham" by Suzy Bogguss was VERY NICE to find, as her voice is so soothing to me. ~"Bird Dog" by Shaman's Harvest, was brought to my attention last week, and yes, still love it. ~ "House of Bach", by Ezinma, was also brought to my attention last week, and I hope to hear more of the artist. ~ "Across the Stars - Star Wars Lofi" by Mik and Samuel Kim is a soothing remix of the classic love theme.
