JOY & CRUSH
So, Marco (Lin Fan) is in Girls Like Us (黑怕女孩), a all-female hiphop competition on Tencent/WeTV!
The first episode broadcast today. There are 83(?) competitors/trainees and they are going to be put together in groups. Putting some of the details under cut.
Note that I'm relying on the subs for the details.
Lin Fan was in the last 1/4 of the competitors to come into the room. Most of the competitors seemed to know who she was but none knew her personally. She was a bit shy and apparently was a bit scared of some of the other competitors (shades of her reaction to some of her teammates on "Minds of Billy Milligan"!) so she kind of sat in a corner away from everybody.
The mentors all performed first to establish their creds. Then they started calling competitors to come on stage. Unlike Youth With You 2, the competitors were not graded solely by the mentors. Instead, each competitor got votes from both mentors and competitors and could choose to be a label founder (a leader, I think) or member.
Lin Fan was the second called to perform. They played a few notes of"All Right" as she came on the stage. She noted in both the interview and on stage that she was there to get better at hiphop/rap. (Hilariously, in two sections of the interview, they played the "Lin Fan tries to roar" clip from her first Youth With You 2 performance.) She chose to be a founder so that she could choose her teammates and performed a song called "Busy" that Yoon had something to do with. I thought she did pretty good, but O'm biased. The lyrics weren't translated when I watched but apparently she didn't get across "I'm too busy to listen to those who diss me". She was asked about extra talents and said she had a genuine smile.
A lot of girls seemed to like her but unfortunately she fell short of the required number to become a founder (she needed 22, she got 17) and so is going to be a member instead. One of the mentors noted that she hadn't matured enough and also should have not worn a ring during her performance, as she was a bit hesitant punching the stage during her performance. Jackson Wang (one of the mentors) told her to keep her passion.
It seems like from previews that quite a few founders will end up wanting her on their teams so that's good, at least!
I was off! They chose "labels" in the second half. It sounded like a few groups would be happy to have her but she picked a group of old-school hip-hop people and said she wanted to learn from her seniors.
