The Violet Burning is a Christian alternative band based in Boston, Massachusetts - and they’re everything I love about the nineties. The dark and dirty guitar. The eerie-and-soothing all at once vocals. The raw emotion. The lyrics of The Violet Burning depict a writer painfully aware of his own humanity, his sinful nature and his helplessness. Faith-based lyrics like “Do you feel scared like I do? Do you feel lower than angels?” cut to the core and will fester in the back of your mind for days on end.
Their 1992 album “Strength” is ranked no. 69 on HM Magazine’s “Top 100 Christian Rock Albums of All Time” list. (HM Magazine is one of the first ‘zines to cover Christian metal.) Their self-titled 1996 album is my personal favorite, with “Low” and “Crush” being high points in the gloomy and atmospheric record. Fans of The Cranberries will feel right at home listening to The Violet Burning stuck in traffic on the way to work.
I’m currently playing their song “Stay With Me,” and it sounds like it could have been a Pink Floyd song. I highly recommend this band. 8/10.

Rose Blossom Punch was a Christian post-grunge/alternative formed in 1995 at the heart of the grunge scene in Seattle, Washington. Their albums “Ephemere” and “Sorry to Disappoint You” serve as a powerful, faith-based alternative to the self-destructive secular artists of the time. The guitar is gritty, the vocals almost angelic. I highly recommend them to any Christian sick of their local Christian radio station.
