Went to Coney Island a while ago. A lot of the game booths had just Pikachu and Charizard plush as prizes. Street vendors had hats of Pikachu and Charmander.
What year is it?
Poke Planning Stickers are complete and available now! Honestly tempted to use them all for myself tbh 😅 Link in Bio!
I’m going to do something a bit different here today and look back at something that’s intrigued me for a while. The 2002 World Championships were run by Wizards of the Coast, and were done with the Team Rocket-Legendary Collection format. Slowking had not received an errata, making the format much different than how it’s played today. Sadly, they only had an unofficial Unlimited event for anyone over 15, as they had functionally kept the main tournaments to 14 and under (a dumb decision that was quickly reversed when Wizards lost its license).
As you’d probably expect, Slowking dominated. The 11-14 age group was won by Dylan Austin with a Dark Feraligatr/Slowking deck, and Slowking was seen in 2 more top 8 decks (and take into account that it’s not sure what 2 other top 8 players even used). Other decks that were somewhat popular at the time, one featuring Espeon and one featuring Kingdra and Steelix, also were near the top. And then there was the Slowking deck with the strangest partner of all: Joe Spanier taking that card with Murkrow and, believe it or not, a pair of Lanturn cards and a wild array of techs.
I recently found a deck list at an old German card forum, and I’ll list what I can get from it here, but here’s the link as the deck’s on the 8th post if anyone wants to correct me after the fact: https://www.etcg.de/forum/index.php?thread/352-light-lanturn/ Pokemon (24)
-4 Slowpoke (doesn’t specify, but Neo Genesis seemed most popular) -4 Slowking (Neo Genesis) -3 Cleffa (Neo Genesis) -3 Chinchou (also doesn’t specify, but I’d lean toward Neo Revelation) -2 Lanturn (Neo Revelation) -2 Light Lanturn (Neo Destiny) -2 Murkrow (Neo Genesis) -1 Caterpie (Neo Discovery) -1 Tyrogue (Neo Discovery) -1 Gligar (Neo Genesis) -1 Jigglypuff (based on the Murkrow, going to assume Southern Islands) Trainers (23)
-4 Professor Elm -4 Bill -3 Pokemon Trader -3 Focus Band -3 Gold Berry -3 Double Gust -3 Balloon Berry
Energy (13)
-10 Lightning -3 Darkness
This was being branded as a Lanturn deck, and Lanturn (and Light Lanturn) did really annoy those Horsea that Kingdra decks had to use. The person posting the deck wasn’t too impressed with the Lanturn cards, though, and I’m not surprised: They’re decent cards but nothing amazing. They could easily fall flat against anything else. It’s a good thing there were other cards to help.
The core here seems to be Slowking and Murkrow, really. Slowking could sit there on the Bench and force coin flips to even use a Trainer, and it was clearly overpowered without an errata. Murkrow could trap something in play and then lock it in for good as long as Slowking prevented Trainers from being played, with Murkrow slowly picking apart the opposing Pokemon. Jigglypuff from Southern Islands could force a favorable switch, making it go well with Slowking and Murkrow.
The others were a little more fun. Tyrogue tried to pressure Baby Pokemon, though with a bunch of coin flips involved. Gligar could try to be a Fighting-type attacker that didn’t need flips and took Colorless Energy, but the value of this seems iffy to me. And then there was Caterpie. 20 damage for a Colorless Energy on a Pokemon that happened to hit the common Totodile on a Weakness was actually a role. Only the 40 HP Totodile would fall to this, and the 50 HP version was generally better. There were people back then that used the 40 version, and you’d occasionally see a Caterpie just win a game on turn 1. You could also take out the occasional Phanpy like this as well. From what I have gathered, this happened a few times during the tournament.
The Lanturn deck, in the end, was more of a Slowking/Murkrow deck that had a nice little option to annoy Kingdra and a single card that could steal a win against some Feraligatr and Donphan decks. It was rather strange, yet a solid core helped get a good result. Some of the techs were even known back then: It seems like Caterpie was a thing that showed up from time to time, and actually had more success in some of the less known formats. I saw a story about a Japanese regional that was won by a Caterpie recently, after all. As for Lanturn itself, it was just filling a small role. It was nice to see something interesting near the top even so.
What as the worst nickname you seen on a Pokémon?
You get some dumb ones like "ButtFace" "DeezNuts" etc, usually by kids or teens, but pokemon are pretty smart and they will know if they are being made fun of and half of the time, that's how you get a pokemon who disrespects or ignores it's trainer.
One of the worst are when people just outright insult or use names with serious intent. (Loser, weak, useless)
I think I once I heard someone call their Jigglypuff a Slur, needless to say me and Eddie put a stop to that right away.
Be nice to your pokemon, they are great companions and hopefully family.

In-between Shiny hunts I’ve been doing a normal type only run on Pokemon Sun. (For those of you wondering why I’m using Jigglypuff, Bewear, Rufflet, and Alolan Raticate, dual-type Pokemon can be used as long as Normal is one of that Pokemon’s types)
It’s actually been pretty challenging so far and I’ve had to rely on TMs a lot, though surprisingly most of them can’t be utilized by my team.
Pictor is the unofficial mascot of the run and team leader; he’s surprised me many times so far. His biggest victory at the moment is taking down the totem Salazzle all on his own. I know it’s going to take a lot of trial and error to give him a more decent moveset ( which probably won’t really be possible until I can access the move relearner; also him getting Growl was a mistake, thanks Alolan Diglett) but I want to use him through the entire playthrough.
All of my Pokemon in this run are nicknamed after constellations; the normal types are named after current constellations and the ones that aren’t (the Rowlet I started with and the random Pokemon for the Pokedex quests like Rockruff and Cutiefly which are currently just chilling in my PC in game) are named after former constellations.
This may or may not be my final team; we’ll see.
