The Missing Fang AU Part 4 - Kannabi Bridge

The Kannabi Bridge Mission or how Team Minato learns the truth of what happened to the White Fang.

“The White Fang was a true hero. He understood that while the mission was important, saving his comrades was just as important. The people admire him not just because he completed the mission, but because he rescued his comrades too instead of leaving them to be killed or interrogated. He could have left them behind, they were injured and in no shape to fight, but he chose to guard them because he could. That’s true strength. That’s what a true ninja should be. I’m going to rescue Rin with or without you.”

Kakashi turns away from Obito and leaves him behind, scoffing at his teammate’s obnoxiousness. Who did Obito think he was lecturing him about his father? As if Kakashi didn’t already know what Sakumo believed in. And that thought forces him to stop. He did know what his father believed in. His father had told him before enrolling him in the academy. Remember Kakashi, the difference between Shinobi and the bandits and criminals we kill is small, but significant. We fight not to kill, but to protect. The more you have to protect, the stronger you are.

He’s standing on a branch, ahead of him is Kannabi bridge, the target he has to destroy, and behind him are Rin and Obito, the teammates Minato sensei entrusted to lead and protect in his place. Carried on the wind that brushes his hair is the echo of his father’s words. He’s the White Fang’s son, Kakashi Hatake, and after all these years he has found his ninja way.

Far away near the border, Minato makes quick work of the reinforcements Iwa sends. They retreat, and Minato takes a deep breath and wonders if he should teleport to where his team is, or meet them directly at Kannabi bridge. Meanwhile, Kakashi takes a blade to the eye, and Obito finally awakens his sharingan, they find Rin and put up a good fight. Then the enemy decides to bring down the cave on him.

Kakashi uses an advanced earth jutsu to create a dome that keeps them from getting crushed. It was a Hatake family technique that his father had promised to teach him when he was a jonin. While he wasn’t there, the genin team he trained was, and they were happy to teach him when he asked. It takes quite a bit of chakra, but Kakashi doesn’t mind, his father was a hero, and using his favoured jutsus to protect his friends was worth every drop of chakra it took.

They’re surrounded by Iwa nin, one of them mistakes him for the White Fang, when Kakashi says he’s his son, the Iwa nin replies, “Well then, I’ll kill the others and take you to join your father in the prison.” For a moment Kakashi is stunned, what is that guy talking about? The enemy sees his wide eyes and takes the opportunity to taunt what he sees as a little child. “Five years ago, a single team from Iwa had gotten into the Land of Fire to spy, but instead of information they found the living legend, the White Fang. He was too exhausted to even stand, so of course, they took him home, and he’s been our honoured guest ever since. You must have missed him, don’t worry, you will join him soon enough.”

Kakashi growls low in his throat. He grips the white chakra sabre tightly, and uses a move he had once seen Sakumo do. He channels chakra into the blade, and slashes the air with it, and like he hoped, a blade entirely of white chakra is released, slicing the man he was talking to in half. He prepares to do the same to the others, but Minato shows up and makes quick work of them. Rin tries her best to heal Kakashi’s eye, but only time will tell if he will be blind and to what extent. For now, he’ll have a scar, and be effectively half blind since he needs to keep it covered.

They discuss what the Iwa nin said to Kakashi and what they should do about it. Obito wants to meet his hero, but also, the White Fang has spent years in captivity and deserves to be rescued as soon as possible. Rin agrees with him. Minato says that they should finish the mission and go home to inform the Hokage and let him send a trained rescue team. He adds that the prison is on the other side of Kannabi bridge. They can either destroy the bridge and report back and let another team rescue Sakumo, or they can rescue Sakumo themselves and attempt to destroy the bridge later on the way back, hoping that it won't be reinforced till then.

He says that since Kakashi is the team leader for this mission he should decide. Minato actually wants to do the rescue now while they have a chance, but he wants Kakashi to admit he was wrong and that captured comrades deserve to be saved no matter what. He’s a teacher dammit, he can’t just let a teaching moment go. (It doesn't really occur to him to take into account that Kakashi came back to help Obito rescue the captured Rin.)

Kakashi tells Minato that the chance of Iwa killing his dad is too high. Minato nods and waits for him to continue. Kakashi wants to go rescue his dad. Of course he does, but he can’t say it. Not after all the time he spent saying that ‘shinobi stupid enough to get captured should be left behind’. Somewhere he’d known his dad would never have agreed with that. That he would rather die than live in a world where he would have to sacrifice his comrades. He starts crying and apologising for everything he said and for leaving Rin and Obito behind.

Minato almost faints, he wanted Kakashi to admit he was wrong, but reducing him to tears was not what he intended at all. His team hugs him and tells him they understand why he acted the way he did, that it doesn’t matter he left Rin and Obito behind at first since he came back for them and saved them from being crushed. They reassure him that they love him, sharp edges and all, and that he is forgiven and that they trust him to lead them. Team Minato unanimously decides to rescue Sakumo.

I absolutely love the fact that Kakashi doesn't care about his image in front of the whole world, he'd take out his book & start reading it in front of anyone no matter who they are or what their rank, without giving a single f but he'd be mortified if it was his dogs, trying to hide his shame behind his back like a kid who got caught by his mother 😂

The Missing Fang AU Part 3 - The Funeral and After

A look into how various people in Konoha deal with Sakumo Hatake’s death.

There is no proper funeral for Sakumo, since there is no body to bury. After being MIA for a month, considering the ongoing War and the hatred Suna has for Sakumo, Hiruzen and his council conclude that Sakumo has most likely been killed. While they have no news of a body, his red and white sleeve was used by a Suna Jonin to claim the bounty on his head. Since he was a recognised hero of the Second Shinobi War and a Clan Head, in accordance to tradition, Konaha holds a full state honours memorial service while his name is etched onto the KIA Memorial Stone.

The ceremony is attended by the Hokage, his council, all the Clan Heads and their Heirs, almost all of the Shinobi who went on missions with Sakumo, several friends, and Kakashi. There is no other family for Kakshi there, so his father’s genin team, despite their position as Clan Heirs, defy their parents and sit with him.

That day Inoichi wears his hair the way his sensei did, and decides it suits him well enough to stick with it. Shikaku resists the itch to ask as many questions as he can, to analyse every aspect of that fateful mission and figure out where everything went wrong, who’s fault was it, how it could have been prevented. Sensei always told him to leave it be, that nothing would come out of obsessing over such things, to learn the lesson and move on. Chouza, arguably the sanest and most normal of the bunch, tries valiantly to hold back his tears and be a pillar of strength for little Kakashi who will never have the chance to learn from his father and spend as much time with him and they did.

Kakashi sits numbly at the memorial, it doesn’t matter to him. His father is gone and even his body is missing. He can’t even be certain that his parents are together in the afterlife since his father won’t be buried properly. When the ceremony is complete some people start coming up to him to offer sympathies. Kakashi nods and politely shakes their hands, until the teammates his dad sacrificed himself for come up to him.

How dare they? They got him killed and now they want to mourn? They got themselves captured. His father had told him very little about his mission, as was common at his rank, but afterwards, while he wasn’t given any details, the Hokage had told what had happened. They were supposed to be a team perfect for infiltration, all they did was get captured and then leave his father to fend for himself so they could live.

One of them boldly walks up to him and starts to say that he should be proud of his father for his sacrifice. Proud of what? Kakashi asks. He hears a hush fall over everyone in attendance, and is acutely aware of everyone watching him. Chouza tries to put a hand on his shoulder to pull him away from it all, but Kakashi has scented blood, and like the hound he is, he will go for the kill.

“Proud of what? My father died not because he chose to, but because his incompetant teammates left him no other choice. My father completed a mission meant for a full team all by himself, then he rescued you idiots and gave himself up to let you escape! He died because of you! It’s your fault! You don’t get to mourn him! You should have died! If he had left you fools to die like you deserved he would still be here! He was worth a thousand of you, he was the White Fang! MY FATHER WAS A HERO AND YOU KILLED HIM!”

Towards the end Kakashi’s voice cracks as he shouts at them, but he doesn’t cry. He finally lets Choza pull him away, but as he turns, he hears Shikaku mutter, “Kid’s not wrong. Now leave and keep my sensei’s name out of your useless mouths.”

Most of the people in attendance, more or less agree with that. The genius White Fang was a living legend, and now Konoha has lost him, just when there was a war at their doorstep. Soon rumours about the mission start spreading around Konoha and even beyond - The White Fang of the Leaf, failed by his comrades. The hero the leaf did not deserve, the hero they failed.

Sakumo’s pack can’t feel his chakra. They, like everyone else, think he’s dead. Kakashi doesn’t summon them, they understand why. They don’t mind since Pakkun tells them all about Sakumo’s pup.

Ino-Shika-Cho are equal parts devastated and proud of Sakumo’s choices. He’s a hero, they intend to honour his ways. Almost everything they know outside of their clan techniques, is what he taught them. He even had them let go of the traditional team tactics and make some new ones. They vow to never leave anyone behind, and to live and die together if it comes to it. They wish they had appreciated him more when he was here.

They try to check up on Kakashi. He usually brushes them off, but sometimes, he asks about his dad. Those moments are few and far in between but they understand that Kakashi needs to grieve at his own pace. It’s why they don’t object too strongly whenever he says stuff like ‘not everyone deserves to be saved’ and how teammates who get injured or captured on a mission are a ‘burden best dropped’. They know he’s lashing out. They also believe that when push comes to shove, he’ll prove that he’s his father’s son. They just hope the cost isn’t too high.

Choza goes so far as to try and get Kakashi on his genin team, but Hiruzen refuses, saying that Sakumo’s death is too fresh and Choza and Kakashi having that shared grief will be a hindrance to the team. He also doesn’t want the other two genin to take a back seat to Kakashi and his issues.

Truthfully, Hiruzen is getting tired of baby fang’s bite. He had to remove four shinobi from the field, no one wanted to work with them, not since Kakashi laid the blame for his father’s death at their feet. He feels Choza and the other two are far too indulgent of the boy’s anger. He hopes Minato, the loyal soldier that he is, will get Kakashi in line.

Minato struggles with getting Kakashi to change his mind about teammates. He is aware of Lord Third’s unsaid wishes for Kakashi and while the goal is the same Minato’s motives are different. He fears one day Kakashi will need help but he won’t be able to ask for it, or worse, that no one will help him even if he does. He knew Sakumo in passing though Jiraiya Sensei, he knew him enough to know that he was a great shinobi, one of the very best there were, but he also knew that at the end of the day he was an even better man. While Kakashi was set on the path to be a great fighter, teaching him to be a good person was Minato’s duty and he wasn’t going to let his student fall prey to the darkness. If only he could figure out how to do it.

Obito admires the legendary White Fang of the Leaf. He doesn’t realise that he’s Kakashi’s dad. He doesn’t notice the way Kakashi always huffs and ignores him or walks away when he talks about his hero and how he completed a team mission on his own and got teammates out of enemy territory safely. Kakashi, out of sight but always listening, just thinks about how he died because his teammates didn’t go back for him the way he went back for them.

Some nights, when he lies awake in his empty clan compound, a treacherous part of mind, the part he keeps buried deep below, wonders if his father was really a hero for saving his comrades, or if he was just an idealistic fool who died for nothing. A part of Kakashi hates Sakumo for dying, and the rest of him hates himself for hating his father.

Some moments were the suggestion of @depressedhatakekakashi Thank you!

A friendly reminder that Kakashi is actually very fit, he's not skinny or small.

I mean look at those THICC thighs! 👀

This man definitely never skips legs days, I mean, how can anyone forget how muscular and well defined Kakashi's body actually is when we got to see a small glances of him without his loose clothes?!!

Kakashi actually trains as hard as anyone else if not harder as I previously explained in this post

And we've seen him standing beside Gai and Obito countless of times before and there wasn't any size differences between them

Kakashi has a great body and the world needs to remember that.

Umino Iruka, useless son of Shimura Danzo, was good for one thing, and one thing only - a political marriage. Handed off to Sir Hatake Kakashi to ensure his service as a warrior for the Shimura family, Iruka knew the man as his husband for only one night before he rode off to fight demons for the glory of the empire.

Now, Hatake is back, a lauded hero of the Demon Campaign. With his newfound fame, Hatake could easily divorce Iruka, and have anyone he wants - even the Emperor's own son. There's no way he would still want Iruka.

So then why has he come to collect Iruka now, when he was content to leave him without a word three long years ago?

♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon for Sasuke and Kakashi, together or separately, whichever way you like :)

    Thanks for the ask!!! <3

Sasuke (quirk): He feeds or pets cats whenever he sees them. Even the angriest of cats like him. He's like a magnet for cats and he's teased for that, but he's too busy playing with the cats to play it any mind, though.

Kakashi (hobby): He loves to read, not just Icha Icha but nonfiction, thrillers, fantasy, etc. Sometimes when they're cuddling Sasuke reads with him. He also likes to write (pretty sure I've mentioned this before) but Sasuke has actually walked in on him writing and Kakashi in panic would just close the doc. Once Sasuke finds out, he beta reads some of Kakashi's works. He [Kakashi] is a really good writer.

KakaSasu (hobby): They like to cook together. They'll be in the kitchen, with the radio in the background at times swaying [together] along to the music. They like to take Kakashi's ninken out for walks! Even before they start dating. The first time someone saw them they thought they are dating and everyone had heard the dating rumor within a few days. They also like to be in the same room as the other even if they aren't talking or doing anything but enjoying each other's company

as much as i love every kakagai trope, my favorite headcanon is that they get together after the war.

during kakashi's anbu days, gai loves kakashi too much and it would've killed them both (literally and figuratively).

kakashi's team was short one member (soon to be filled in by itachi).

it was also around this time that gai really sees kakashi's depression and asks to join anbu, despite knowing all of its secrecies and how much it wears down on people. gai knows it's a risky move but he decides to go forward regardless only for kakashi's sake.

When turned down by hiruzen, gai says this:

gai is selfless to a fault, and he is willing to go to such extreme lengths for kakashi. that kind of mindset is not healthy at all and their dynamic then would've been very toxic for both of them. i love reading good angst, but truthfully, gai would've died in kakashi's place, trying to protect him. of course he would still do it later on, but at this point they were not strong enough to be invincible, and gai's view of death is still based on his father's sacrifice (see my other post for a better elaboration).

and if he did get hurt or die, it would've killed kakashi.

on the mission where kakashi and itachi shadow gai's team, kakashi is so glad to be the one in the shadow doing dirty work just so gai can be a happy, straightforward, and kind shinobi.

if kakashi ever finds out gai tries joining anbu for him, what would he think? and even worse, if gai dies while in anbu, kakashi will probably never recover. his moniker "friend killer kakashi" already weighs on him heavily, but if he truly loses gai... he will spend the rest of his life (if he even lives for much longer after that) blaming himself, and this time there is nobody like gai around to even tell him it's not his fault.

Poor Obito. He really thought Mads was death

Bitch was giving Obito shit for not having the Nine tails or the eight tails before starting shit but literally says that nothing ever goes as planned.

Also, there was no need for this many flashbacks of that mission in the anime.

Madara is only alive out of spite and I respect that.

Babe spelled his name on the tree. Probably got bored during training.

I don't know why, but I love their relationship.
