    [KDRAMA REVIEW] Our Beloved Summer

I am a sucker for slow-burn romances, angst and all that and this one is just right up my alley!!! If you love those things, I definitely recommend OBS for you! To be honest, my mind's a little clouded and I am not yet done crying as I am drafting this but I want to write this as soon as possible so I won't forget the feeling.

Note: I want this to be as spoiler free as possible but I might have spoiled some minor things.

Our Beloved Summer is one of my most anticipated dramas; Wooshik's acting got me ever since I saw him in Train to Busan and I really liked Dami's performance in Itaewon Class. I haven't watched The Witch Part I yet though but yes, I'm planning to watch it soon (maybe this weekend?). Initially, I expected this as a typical rom-com drama where they were high school friends whose relationship developed through the years and ended up as lovers in the present. Amazingly, adding up the ex-lovers trope SERIOUSLY SEALED THE DEAL FOR ME. However, I started the drama 3 weeks late because I was trying to finish another drama before committing myself to OBS. Since reading the plot, I was pretty sure that I won't be able to finish any other drama once I start this because I will be so invested in it. Turns out I was right and thankfully, I managed finishing my previously currently watching drama before starting it.

Watching Our Beloved Summer was such a treat because the story-telling and transition is so smooth even though we have two timelines - the past and present lives (or documentary) of Ung and Yeonsoo. Even with this, I never felt confused while watching which is a plus for me as I get confused with alternating timelines easily. Additionally, I LOVE the OSTs! The songs play just in time to make a scene more meaningful and emotional which was very effective in triggering my tears most of the time. I have also read the OST translations and I kid you not, being able to know the meaning behind the lyrics adds up to the emotional effect of the songs every time it's played in a certain scene. I never NOT cried hearing There For You ever since I read the translations, I swear! The lyrics are related to their story, it felt like they're Yeonsu and Ung's letters for each other. It was such a wonderful feeling being able to watch a drama that can make you feel like you are also involved in the story because watching Our Beloved Summer made me feel like I was watching Ung and Yeonsu’s story behind Ji Ung's lenses.

Dami and Wooshik went above and beyond my expectations! The ✨chemistry✨ was over the top, their micro-expressions and the little details they add in their acting (e.g., those on cue tears, facial expressions, little adlibs, etc.) made a big difference and they definitely owned Yeonsu and Ung. They made themselves as their characters and it's hard to imagine different actors playing the roles they played in this drama. Actually, the supporting characters did a stellar job as well! This is why I really liked the ending: they gave their friends and family their well-deserved spotlights in the last episode! Honestly, this is one of the best endings I have ever watched, they wrapped it up so beautifully I'm so speechless, all I did was cry happy tears.

Our Beloved Summer is not just about ex-lovers meeting and falling in love again but instead, it's a tale of two individuals finding the path in confronting their fears and past that haunts them, being able to overcome these with the help of the people they love most and of course, themselves. It's about acceptance of past mistakes, forgiveness and growth. They also perfectly showed that healing is a painful process but it isn't impossible to overcome if you have the right mindset and a good set of support system - that quality is better than quantity and communication is always the key. And most importantly, it showed us the beauty in finding a love you thought was lost and it taught us to trust the process - that there's always a chance in discovering what you truly want for yourself and being happy again.

It's heartwarming to see the relationship and dynamics they have with the people around them. Even though small in numbers but it is of good quality - just what they needed. It made me realize that having just the right amount of people you can trust is the life I wish to have. Having these people around and sometimes telling them what they needed to hear allowed them to grow outside their comfort zones and realize, albeit later than I expected, how lucky they are for having them in the good and bad times of their life. Being able to witness their journey was such a ride and I'd love to experience it all over again by re-watching it!

Thinking of it, the plot is simple but it was written and executed so beautifully and will most certainly stay in my heart for a long time. The way they showed us the different love languages being present in the leads' relationship added a different kind of intimacy to the scenes, it's such a wonderful thing to watch. The journey was full of tears, happy and sad, but definitely worth it! My only complaint is that I thought this was a rom-com but why do I feel like I cried most of the time? Lol. But still, 100/10!

Thank you OBS team! That was a good run. I'll probably have a hard time watching a new series so I'll just bask into the OBS greatness for now.

Our beloved summer - a crazy ride, a story that will stay with me forever, characters that I relate to on a soulful level.

I have never watched a drama which is this entralling and captivating. You can feel the thrill of personalities clashing, the tears of trauma and the smile of love as if it was happening with you.

It made me cry and laugh at the same time, and this drama - I am never gonna get over it. Each character portrayed, each story shared, each scene acted, each sentence that they spoke, and each emotion that they felt is something I will never get enough of.

The show put reality in such a subtle way that I cannot let go of this drama. It taught me so much, comforted me so much and made me feel loved so much. I will never get used to not being able to see a new episode of this drama on Mondays and Tuesdays. I already feel so empty now that this drama is finished.

I love this drama. I love kook yeon su and choi ung. I love sol-i and eun ho and Ji ung and chae ran and the grandma and ung's parents and the team leader and the whole team and practically ever character in our beloved summer. ❤❤❤

How can a person know everything at 18 but nothing at 22?

Taylor Swift said that, and I think it applies to Yeonsu even though she's not 22 anymore. It is very beautiful to see the passage from adolescence to adulthood because normally many of our certainties are broken. Yeonsu asserted everything during high school, while becoming what she believed most not to be (pathetic), or at least fought hard not to look like one, because at the end of the day she thought she was truly pathetic for all the difficulties she had to face in life. The way she abhorred pathetic things is because she was terrified of someone realizing that she herself was one. Even if it wasn't true. In the end, she didn't have those certainties anymore at 29, where she felt more lost than anything, and this is the phase we find ourselves at twenties after all.

    Not knowing anything else.

    (until.. you know)

so much still left to happen and i honestly have no idea how our beloved summer will end but i am here for it.

this particular episode (ep 14) hits too close to home. actually, the entire drama hits too close to home because it’s like seeing my past relationship on the screen. i had the same reason as yeonsu on why i ended that relationship but the only difference is that we didn’t get back together so i never got to explain to him why. but to be honest, even if we did, i think yeonsu’s action would be mine as well.

if you really didn’t go through such financial crisis as yeonsu & her grandma did—it would be really hard to understand yeonsu’s character. it’s a painful reality but you feel constricted if you are struggling financially. you don’t think about anything else but ways on how to get over it but life is hard enough without it, so what more with it? yeonsu loved(s) ung but sometimes that isn’t enough. who’s to say that if they stayed together that they would remain together for 5 more years? nothing’s ever set to stone.

i truly understand why yeonsu is still reluctant to tell ung. just because you are so close to someone doesn’t mean opening up is easier. in fact, it’s much harder.

and what ung did—wait—is something that i hope everyone does as well. when someone’s having a hard time opening up about their biggest insecurity—you don’t walk away; you stay and you wait until they are ready. ♡

    this is just an observation:

in Our Beloved Summer, the object of jealousy for Choi Woong is Kim Jiwoong and the object of jealousy for Yeonsu is NJ -

Choi Woong feels threatened by Jiwoong bc he knows thats someone Yeonsu is comfortable with and trusts, because they have history together, while Yeonsu feels that way for NJ bc NJ is rich, famous, exciting- and the object of many mens desires.

which i think is a statement of how the show writers understand female and male desire. Yeonsu assumes Choi Woong would be drawn by NJ bc she sees male desire as 1) something that can be accelerated by male competition, [Wanting to be with a woman bc the woman has high social currency among men] 2) something that is drawn to new stimulations. While Choi Woong feels threatened bc he thinks of female desire as something wanting stability and comfort.

I think both viewpoints depend on a maybe mpre archaic framework of femininity and masculinity the whole [men want to spread their genes] and [women want a stable partner to raise children with] etc etc but this is s.korea.

there is something so comforting and unbelievably gentle in the way Woong's head was in Yeonsu's lap this time around, and she had one hand in his hair and the other intertwined with his as she watched him talk. And despite the fact that she did not interrupt him much, the words she did say and the way she watched him, reflected her love for him so clearly.

There is just so much affection shown in the domesticity of their presence around each other, how there is no overly cringe and dragged out hug/kiss or hand holding. It is how love is supposed to look like, natural, gentle and warm.

the music scorer, cinematographer and editor of our beloved summer deserve so much praise especially with episode 12 !!!! this episode is everything i needed for the fluff and i knew something is bound to happen at the very end but jesus i didn’t even care because i was just so happy seeing yeonsu and ung back together :( but alas, reality will set in next week and i do not know what the hell will happen but i am all in. thinking how there’s only 4 more episodes left is making me super sad bc i’ve grown so attached to this drama and these characters ugh.

edit: also i really love how they entitle the episodes from films and as a swiftie, while i know begin again is a film, i can’t help but feel giddy bc hehe begin again.

Not to be mean or anything, but a lot of Our Beloved Summer discourse regarding Jiung talks about him forgetting Yeonsu (since she's with Woong) and go for Chaeran (yes, its obvious) who likes him.

But being very honest? I don't want him to end up with Chaeran if the way he does, is by not coming to realize some very important things about his perception of his life and the way he has treated Woong and Yeonsu all these years under that world he's built in his head. Yes, I do feel bad for him for a multitude of reasons, but both tumblr and twitter immediately pairing him up with Chaeran seems very typical kdrama trope-y and a forceful yay-everyone-has-someone-now!!! and not in a good way.

Jiung's issues aren't centered around unrequited love, or affection. They are way deeper than that. And until he resolves that, grows as a person, Chaeran will just seem like a sort of substitute/what he has to settle on since he cannot have Yeonsu, especially because not once has he shown any romantic interest in her. Whether he comes to like her afterwards will still be iffy, to me at least, because he has some harsh realities to face and come to peace with.

JESUS CHRIST that episode was so good !!! that’s what you call character development. i am in love with this drama and i am so in love with yeonsu and ung’s story. ung’s backstory is easy to see but the way the writers threaded it was so beautifully done. i just love it so much. ung finally said the words yeonsu is looking for and yeonsu is finally opening up to ung (crying in front of him).

The cold, hard truth is that disliking NJ and/or Yeonsu is just rooted in internalized misogyny.

I don't care what people say, or what they use to justify anything. The next episode previews don't give me enough to go off against NJ. I don't particularly dislike her character, or like her. But my reasoning comes from the sometimes push and pull behavior she has, and the assumption that she might mislead and lie to Yeonsu purely out of spite/jealously.

But her liking Woong, her trying to stay in his life. Her spending time with him. There's nothing wrong with that. She's a little off sometimes because it seems like he's her distraction, but wasn't he Yeonsu's too? And are all the characters in this show perfect for people to pick on NJ? The apathy for her storyline feels so cold hearted. Clearly Woong is a very well established artist, who is publicly famous and recognized for his works to be able to hold an exhibition attractive enough to catch a celebrity's attention. It is NOT that unbelievable that their paths crossed. And her storyline is an attempt to remind people of not doing what they're doing rn. For real, read stuff telling her to get over the negativity because its her job and. You guys. You saying this. You're precisely the problem the drama is highlighting.

If the main reason for your dislike for NJ is that she might have a shot with Woong (which she doesn't, not because she isn't someone worth it but because he's uninterested, she seems a p good match otherwise, if she works on the faults), and you have no problem feeling sad for Jiung. Then your dislike is rooted in misogyny. If NJ was a man, I'm sure at least more half the fandom would have no problem with the progression of the story.
