I'm convinced that Elmo is actually an evil genius who craves power.

In a very slow motion coup, Elmo convinced his Sesame St. neighbors to have him replace Big Bird as the host of the show based on strong sales numbers of the Tickle-Me-Elmo toy. Once in a position of power, older characters were slowly pushed to bit parts and were replaced with ardent loyalists. By the time any caught on, it was far too late.

Now, Elmo rules Sesame St. as a dictator, where any and all new skits and bits must be expressly approved by him. His rule is enforced by the surprisingly powerful mage Abby, who is the only creature Elmo truly fears, and Cookie Monster, who is easily manipulated because of his severe addiction to cookies.
