This was pretty solid for the budget, being a direct-to-video flick. A slow burn that keeps you intrigued, possibly due to the score...or maybe just the pretty face. (Probably both.) Not scary, or gruesome, or exciting, just decent. It managed to keep me engaged enough to sit through the goddamn commercials, which is saying something. (It's free to stream on, like, 5 different second-rate services. I watched it on Vudu. Their commercial breaks aren't too long.) But the acting was fine, the dialog was fine, the pace was good, never being boring. I guess the ending didn't really hit hard, but it was fine too. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but I definitely didn't mind spending the time on it. 6.5/10 for the pace, the pretty face, and the Irish accents.

"The Acid King" Satanic True Crime Documentary Review

This disturbing true crime documentary is about a horrifying Satanic panic era murder that occurred in 1984. The documentary follows the story of Ricky Kasso, son of a local high school football coach in the peaceful town of Northport, New York. At the age of 13 his dad threw him out of the house and the young boy survived by selling drugs on the street. Kasso would sleep in the woods, unlocked cars, backyards and the houses of friends. To cope with his situation he would use drugs such as marijuana, LSD and angeldust.

Kasso became acquainted with the "Knights of the Black Circle", a gang of young street dealers who would wear Satanic symbols to scare off other dealers (although they were not devil worshippers). Kasso developed an interest in Satanic literature and heavy metal music. His parents sent him to a psychiatric hospital for drug rehabilitation and psychiatric care after he was kicked out of school for constantly skipping class. The boy realized that if he pretended he didn't worship Satan anymore and told the doctors what they wanted to hear they would let him out. In the end he was released, dropped out of school and continued dealing drugs and worshiping the devil.

Kasso had grown to hate a local teenager named Gary Lauwers after Lauwers had stolen 10 bags of angeldust from his jacket at a party. Kasso confronted Lauwers soon after and Lauwers returned 5 of the 10 pilfered bags, he also promised to repay Kasso $50 for the other bags that had been used. Kasso would have none of it, the young Satanist beat the shit out of him and held a grudge. On the night of the murder (June 19th, 1984), Kasso borrowed a radio from a friend. He invited Lauwers to get high with him and his buddies Troiano and Quinones. The group walked into the woods and took several hits of LSD and smoked a bunch of angel dust.

At some point Kasso attacked Lauwers, stabbing him in the chest and biting him on the neck. Kasso kept assaulting Lauwers and according to the testimony of Quinones Troiano helped Kasso by holding Lauwers during the attack, although Quinones later changed his story. The attack was absolutely brutal, the victim was stabbed between 17 and 35 times and might have had his eyes gouged out. Kasso supposedly demanded that Lauwers say aloud "Say you love Satan". After the attack, Kasso and Troiano covered Lauwers body with forest debris and left it in the woods.

After committing the crime Kasso bragged about the murder to his friends. He claimed Satan had taken the form of a black crow after the murder and had cawed. Kasso interpreted this as Satan giving approval. He brought many teens to see Lauwers' body before burying the remains. A couple weeks later the police were alerted to the crime by an anonymous tip. On July 4, 1984, police searched the local woods and recovered the mutilated body of Lauwers. Kasso and Troiano were arrested the next day. A few days later Kasso was egged on into committing suicide by other inmates. He hung himself in his cell.

Troiano signed 2 confessions that he later recanted. Quinones gave witness testimony of Troiano helping Kasso to kill Lauwers during the murder but later denied this at Troianos trial. Quinones was very high at the time of the killing and his testimony was brought into question. Troiano was acquitted of second-degree murder.

This was the main case that led to the Satanic panic of the 1980s and early 1990s. A cop had mistakenly told the press that Kasso was the head of a satanic cult and the media ran with the story. Soon the entire nation believed that there were millions of Satanists out there performing human sacrifices, abducting children and engaging in bloody Satanic orgies, all because of the actions of one dust-head.

I really enjoyed this documentary. It reminded me a lot of another documentary called "Cropsy", both feature a true crime case in New York state and manage to portray a really frightening, creepy atmosphere while doing so. If you're a big fan of stories about the Satanic panic and you want to watch something that really captures the energy of that era I would highly recommend checking this one out. Dialog so bad it was obviously written by someone who didn't speak English. Acting and photoshop effects so bad they were lol-funny. Dubbed in English even though they were all speaking English. Oh, and a Korean-style love song moment in the middle of the climax 😆 The story was actually decent, but nothing we haven't seen before. The two girls were attractive enough to help me get through it, and there's a shower/towel & sex scene but no nudity, so no bonus points. I was ready to slap this one with a 4 (being a 3.5) until the love-song moment. I mean, we watch horror to get away from that kinda crap, come on! Lol Honestly, tho, I usually don't sit all the way through movies that are this bad so that's gotta count for something. (I had to mute the love song, tho. I couldn't hang for the full 2 minutes of it.) 3/10, streaming w/adds on Vudu.

cr1tikal made a video about his OCD a long time ago of which a large portion was dedicated to how his disorder affected how he watched a specific porn video. i was pretty stupid when i watched it so i just thought it was weird but what made me unsubscribe was the really shallow and scrotelike review of midsommar he posted. im not surprised hes a depp apologist tbh his very earliest videos are caked in misogynist language, even if in the casing of "absurdist humor"

OHHHHHHHHHH MY GOD you're RIGHT i had completely forgotten about the porn video thing!!!!! when i replied to the previous anon i couldn't remember any specific examples but your ask literally unlocked that memory in my brain lmfao. thinking back on it it was SO gross and definitely something that would make me drop a content creator in an instant nowadays, but back then i just kinda let it slide. it wasn't until the misogynistic comments keep piling on and on that i decided his stuff wasn't worth watching anymore. i guess i should be proud that my standards have improved with age LMAO

#never watched the midsommar review tho i'm pretty sure #cause i've never watched the movie #(yeah i know)

The new Chip and Dale movie on Disney+ is strange. The film tries to combine 90s homage, Judd Apatow style humor, and millennial cynicism and still make it for a PG audience. I don’t know how to feel about that, because Disney has no real reason to put out cynical, tongue and cheek, movies about the state of animation. After vacuuming up other studios and their IP, they are arguably the largest single entity of animation in the world.

Many have pointed out the similarities between Chip and Dale and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but as a project, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a collaboration between Disney and Warner Bros. Each studio had their bureaucratic stipulations, like neither’s characters would get more screen time than the other’s, but it was ultimately a more creative and unique achievement as a film. Chip and Dale feels like a shelling out of licensing fees for the express purpose of shitting on those licenses. This especially felt true to me when they show Shrek’s melting face in a furnace, which many of you know, was a movie produced by ousted Disney executive Jeffery Katzenberg to lampoon Disney.

The whole film felt disingenuous, because it’s Disney. I don’t think they were making something risky, but they wanted the appearance of a risk taking movie. As if to say, “Hey y’all! This giant soulless corporation knows it’s cool to be meta, and self deprecating humor reaffirms some notion of humility to our audience, though it is 100% artificial. Can’t spook the shareholders too much, which is why we put this movie on Disney+ at the same time as our new Guaranteed smash success Star Wars vehicle!”

With all that being said, and ignoring the realities of Disney as a corporation, the film does some fun things. Seeing 2D characters, CGI characters, claymation and felt puppets seamlessly interacting with real world props, and real set pieces is wonderful! Chipmunk sized desks and lunch tables existing next to their life sized counterparts is hilarious, but also annoying that greater accessibility exists in fiction than in real life, but I don’t think that was the intended message of the filmmakers. I did find myself in enjoying the writing and jokes, like the Seth Rogan characters all at the same convention, all doing the Seth Rohan laugh was stupid, but kinda delightful. Ugly Sonic was so goddamn weird and funny, but at the same time Disney pointing at this property just to be like, “Remember THAT shit!? WE would never make something THAT ugly! And that’s the QUALITY we at Disney strive for. When you purchase a Disney + subscription [trails off with aggressive fart noises made with mouth]…”.

    It’s a mixed bag, give it a watch. 6.5/10

    Movie Review: 'Top Gun: Maverick'

    Movie Review: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

After thirty-six years, Tom Cruise’s ace pilot Maverick is back on the big screen in Joseph Kosinski’s long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick, but was the sequel worth the wait? Coming from someone who liked but didn’t love the original Top Gun (I promise I’m not just saying that to sound edgy or cool), I’ve got to say that Top Gun: Maverick is a far superior film in almost every way. I would even go as…

    Another nice chinese series

I have kept watching several east asian TV series in large part because they give an impression of living styles and thinking in those countries that are quite important to the world economy. Among these there are many excellent works.

I have been recently delighted by the chinese-mainland series Brilliant class 8 which is the story of a rock star with popularity issues who goes back to teaching music in a high school like he did before becoming famous. The story of course involves his romance with another teacher, but it is also very much about the students in the special music class he teaches.

As usual for a primary chinese-mainland TV series the production values are very good, but the quality of this series goes beyond that: even if a star and other stars who are his friends are involved this is not a fantasy about a girl marrying a star, it is almost entirely a story about two teachers and their class. Like most chinese-mainland series the story develops slowly, but that allows for nuance and subtlety and some slow but good comical effects. The schools, houses, scenery are also well chosen and presented. Characters have some flaws, and try to overcome them.

So it is both very good and informative, but it has defects as well, the usual: the story and the characters are too nice, the teachers are too keen on the happiness of their students, even the bad people are not that bad, and the characters are a bit too good at overcoming their flaws, and their living standards a bit too high (except for the stars of course).

But overall it is very good, the actors, especially the protagonists, represents their characters with skill and subtlety, and the plot is somewhat realistic even if a bit too sweet.
