i understand wanting full transparency, but i think there are a couple of things bucking against that. for one, the whole press conference thing is never very transparent. this comes up a lot in response to lynn williams too, when vlatko says basically on positive things about her despite her low output and general form. i don’t think he doesn’t feel those things, i think that he and the rest of the staff have a basic idea of holding things like personal feelings about players closer to the chest. that’s frustrating for a lot of people, but it’s how it functions for every player. i doubt that he was telling every player that he’s ever called up what he tells the media (ie saying that the roster is completely open still and all 18 spots are open), and i don’t think he can automatically say he’s cutting someone to their face either. the world of sports is kind of cold and maybe that should be fixed, but i think this specific situation has been blown out of proportion, and is generally being simplified.
I get that, but something has to change about this culture. It's not right to treat players like they're objects, and that even goes beyond the USWNT. They're still people with families and lives, and I think that they deserve better than to be so obtuse about it, for the lack of better term. But I disagree that this situation is blown completely out of proportion - is it exaggerated? Sure, some people's responses (and maybe my own) have been over the top with frustration and anger. I thought it...didn’t suck? I mean, I’ve written at least half a dozen versions of “Thomas finds happiness by leaving Downton,” so I can hardly cast aspersions at JF for trying it once. My main objection, as far as that goes, is that I don’t really trust him not resort to, “It doesn’t work out with Guy, so he comes crawling back,” if they end up doing a third movie and realize that they’ll miss out on some ticket sales if it doesn’t have Thomas in it.
The romance was rushed, of course, and we didn’t see enough of them together to to make this move really believable--but every romance in the entire franchise is like that; I more than halfway suspect that “meeting someone who would be Suitable and whom you can stand to be around” is what Julian Fellowes thinks falling in love is.
Also, I kind of feel like the reminder about how Lord and Lady Grantham’s marriage started out as a business arrangement was thrown in there as a deliberate parallel*, as a backstop against any whiff of homophobia inherent in Thomas’s only successful romance also be a job offer: it’s the same way for posh straight people, and it worked out great for them!
(*I mean, it certainly isn’t a thing that makes any emotional sense for the characters to be talking about at that point**, nor is it relevant to anything else in the plot, as far as I can figure out.)
