07 July 1985 - I believe Oak Street Beach is the only sandy beach on the Chicago Lakefront (the rest are all concrete). {addendum: i’ve been notified in the comments that that is not the case}. I thought it was all "imported" sand but Wikipedia says it's actually sand washed up from Lake Michigan. Obviously sand is not the only thing that got washed up but lots of flotsam and jetsam. This was a very hot Sunday and according to the temperature record it was just north of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the beaches were packed. Every couple of blocks you would see a lifeguard on duty. Noteworthy is the First Lifeguard I came across as I entered the scene, and he was reading a paperback titled WIRED. Ahead of his time.
