yea aaaaa this one's been sitting in my head for agessss, but i guess i haven't shared that much yet? probably since the target audience is like
(maybe i’m wrong) since i think there's a small crowd this who had read/enjoyed the book and an even smaller crowd who watched the series, which means this is for my entertainment mostly-- but you asked, so you get my abridged thoughts™ on a Looking for Alaska mdzs AU
basically i thought it would be Very Angsty to have Lan Wangji divide his life into 'before' and 'after' the death of his love interest in the same way Miles Halter does. Which would make Wei Wuxian the vibrant, reckless, and troubled Alaska character here, which fits all too well.
oh! this all started because i noticed that this song was the one thing all of my mdzs playlists had in common and went "hey wait i might be on to something"
anyways this would be Cloud Recesses era wangxian where they are attending a modern boarding school in Gusu instead of Culver Creek. the other characters... i'm not fully set on who to assign to who but I have a vague idea (ie: Jin Zixuan would definitely be among the rich-kid "Weekday Warriors," and Nie Huaisang would be the Colonel: best friend, roommate, prank mastermind with an appreciation for the arts).
It’s too perfect, Alaska literally gets caught sneaking in alcohol on the first night (the dean aka the Eagle is definitely Lan Qiren) and Miles is immediately obsessed with her even though he’s pretty straight-laced at first, and I think seeing Lan Wangji melt slowly and be integrated into this group of troublemakers and finding he has friends he cares deeply for would be just!! delightful.
Don’t ask me for the details of the rest of the plot though. I haven’t decided if it would be better for Wei Ying to actually die (the visiting-dead-parents guilt could still totally follow the novel, and Lan Wangji’s distress and determination to find out why could too) or to just disappear and be recovered somehow 🤷♀️ but I do know that there’s so many little things that happen between Miles and Alaska that make my brain go “WANGXIAN!!” in all caps in my head.
Alaska’s “how will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?” and Mile’s “I go to seek a great perhaps” just!! I feel like they suit MDZS really well since LfA is also definitely a commentary on *waves hands* a lot of things as well as just an endearing and ridiculous and embarrassing teenage love story. I can’t describe it very well but it has a unique atmosphere and I would loveeee to have that particular flavor of joy and pain for wangxian 🥲🥲 (though i have no idea if this is something i will ever flesh out in any way)
