You wouldn't know it from the album cover, but this is something of a retrospective look at a little New York City-based indie label called Laurie Records that thrived throughout the late 50s and 60s. Laurie played host to big acts such as Dion (& the Belmonts) and The Chiffons, and that's all I've ever really known them for until now. But as evidenced by this excellent collection of twenty tunes, Laurie was so much more than just those two acts.

I really wasn't expecting more than a few good, recognizable hits and maybe one or two dust-collecting gems on this CD, but the bulk of these actually turned out to be those dust-collecting gems instead 🤩. Phenomenal blends of pop, doo wop, and R&B abound within this CD, from one-hit wonders like Randy & the Rainbows' "Denise" and Music Explosion's garage rock classic, "A Little Bit of Soul," to no-hit wonders like Carlo Mastrangelo's amazing rock & roll-doo wop thing, “Ring a Ling,” that failed to chart nationally, but that New York DJ Murray the K fawned over. Ernie Maresca, who's known for co-writing Dion's "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer" is on here as well with his own great uptempo and booming rock & roll-doo wop bop and top-ten hit, "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)."

A lot of great songs in this CD that documents the history of Laurie Records, and a vast majority of which I've never heard before in my life. A lot of these ended up charting in the top-twenty on Billboard's Hot 100 in their day, but they seem to have been long forgotten since then. So don't sleep on 'em, especially if you fancy yourself as a 50s and 60s oldies fiend!
