Ellie n alan weren't even together in the book, actually the kids assume they are and I think Alan or Ellie laugh about it. I mean a ton of stuff is diff from the book- Alan is a completely different character. But Laura Dern pointing out their age difference and how weird it is is valid and in the book the age difference was much more obvious bc ur imagining an old dude in a hawaiian shirt n not seeing handsome sam neill who looks a bit younger than he is and it would've been weird if they were together and the book even points that out.

allow me to set the scene for you. the year is 1873, and the colorado territory is a land of cowboys and outlaws, gunslingers and cattle ranchers. jake wilder, a cowboy and the owner of heartcross ranch, isn't looking for a wife — he's too busy getting into shootouts with the band of rustlers who aim to steal his cattle. with his two younger brothers by his side, he works from sunup to sundown at heartcross and doesn't mind his empty bed too much.

but despite it being a marriage of convenience and practicality, the brand new mr. and mrs. wilder find that their feelings are quickly becoming anything but practical. if they can survive the outlaws and, even more daunting, find the bravery to finally admit their feelings for each other, they might just figure out how to fall in love 😉
