Not gonna lie, I was complaining about it on Twitter, but I think it'd be a good idea to bring it up here because I think there's something to be gained from it.
I downright loathe the discourse on "d2 armor bad d1 armor gud" that appears at the beginning of every new season. Maybe it's just because I'm biased as a D2 player who has never, and has no intention of, playing D1. But I do feel many players tend to write off newer sets as being too ugly or terrible or what-have-you and the topic instantly snowballs to players bemoaning the design choices for armor in D2 and making sonnets about how they yearn for the days of "objectively better designed armor". From the randos on Reddit to big names like Gladd, the topic is both cyclical and incredibly tiring (and one of the reasons I ditched /r/DestinyFashion...). No amount of left testicles and rose-tinted glasses are going to convince Bungie to drop the current aesthetics they aim towards for armor sets. It's not even the aesthetic that bothers me, though I prefer D2's selection I do think some of D1 armor is pretty great! It's just the amount of people who go on and on and on about it that rapidly sours my perception of the just the concept of bringing them back. And I think that's a shame.
But the topic does make me think. When it comes to new armor sets, people tend to focus too hard on the set in its entirety. While it makes sense for those who only wear entire sets, I think this sort of approach does a disservice to those new armor sets. I think a more productive approach with looking at armor sets is the aesthetics of each individual armor piece, the details they have, and how they would look in relation to other armor sets. By taking a more constructive approach, we can find armor/shader combinations that work well with the sets, and create some interesting looking outfits with them.
Let's talk about the hot-button topic at the moment: the Hakke set from the new dungeon. Generally speaking, it's an okay looking armor sets with a lot of flexibility to them when it comes to mixing armor. I think the reason they went with this was for the same reason they had the Daito set in Prophecy - they had leftover sets from when they designed the manufacturer-based sets and didn't know what to do with them, so now they're dungeon sets. Admittedly, from a fashion-oriented player's perspective, the Hakke sets are leagues better for creating outfits with than the Daito sets simply out of the manufacturer decals not being plastered haphazardly everywhere, but I digress.
Their simplistic geometrical shapes and generic sci-fi military aesthetic works well with other armor sets of similar aesthetics - sets like Wildwood, Pathfinder, or the ritual armor sets from last year and this year. Since we don't have them in our hands yet, I can't give much information on materials, but at a glance it appears to be mostly leather with a lot of metal and cloth detailing, with Titans getting more metal pieces than Warlocks or Hunters. One notable piece that I could see working particularly well are the Hunter Cloak, whose cape part is entirely netting - this could be interesting when paired with the Psionic Stalker Grips or Strides, who has a similar netting on the right arm and thighs respectively.
Badabing badaboom, suddenly we have a new set of armor to use in our fashion arsenal and we know how to use them.
TL;DR:
When a more constructive approach is taken towards looking at new armor sets, you can gain a better understanding of how to make those sets work for you.
