One of my favorite things on reddit are the subreddits that are just the name of a niche phobia and all the posts are images of things that would trigger that phobia, and the sub is always inexplicably huge

#like off the top of my head there's thalassophobia trypophobia megalophobia and submechanophobia #and it's just all pictures of like. deep water or big things #don't get me wrong i like to idly browse these subs like a couple times a year cause sorting by top posts has some neat stuff #but i'm fascinated by this phenomenon. who are these communities for?? actual phobia sufferers or like... phobia tourists???? #interested in the psychology

Does anyone remember the sea serpent/sea monster under the boardwalk at Wildwood? If you rode the log flume it took you under the boardwalk and there was a sea monster. That dude is the root of my fear/fascination of submechanophobia imagery.

Ok so on one hand I am completely horrified by man-made objects submerged in the sea.

On the other hand I occasionally want to stare at them unblinking.

Here is my submission for ‘Weird Dream Wednesdays’

    A little late but I digress -

    Credit goes to: @darklylucid

If you’ve read any of my previous ‘Weird Dream Wednesdays’ submissions, you’re already well aware of how undeniably bizarre and creepy some of my dreams have been, but instead of considering them ‘nightmares’ and being traumatized by them, I look forward to them. I revel in them.

I am unfazed by a lot of the things I imagine most ‘normal’ people would consider frightening in a dream, because for me, it IS normal. Monsters and slasher killers? Unless I’m threatened first, I’m all too happy to co-exist with them, which isn’t hard considering I usually find them sexy in the first place.

Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes? Hell, I’ve *caused* every last one of these in various dreams, and love watching the destruction they cause. Spiders? I easily avoid them. Snakes? I pet them.

Clowns? I’ve never dreamt of clowns in any shape or form, but if I ever did, I’m pretty confident that ‘nuking it from orbit’ would be a appropriate course of action (READ - I do NOT like clowns…)

I don’t even fear death, because in my dreams, I’m usually the one causing it.

Therefore, theoretically speaking, if I’m practically immune to what most people would consider ‘frightening’ in a dream, what do you suppose could ever come close to scaring ME in one of mine?

The answer might surprise you - I have submechanophobia, the fear of submerged man-made objects.

Weird, I know, and completely unexpected, I assure you. I’ve never even SEEN a wreck of any kind outside of photographs and TV shows, so there is absolutely no logical explanation for why I have such an unusual and irrational fear.

I remember sitting in my grandfather’s chair as a child, flipping through some of his National Geographic magazines and being too frightened to even *touch* a page that contained a photograph of a submerged wreck, ship, plane or otherwise, and don’t even get me *started* on those special editions about the Titanic, because that stuff was pure ‘nightmare fuel’ from cover to cover.

I couldn’t even keep my feet on the floor if a nature documentary I was watching showed footage of a shipwreck, and swimming in a public pool was anxiety-inducing as well if I happened to inadvertently swim too close to the submerged pool drain.

What all this adds up to is that my subconscious, asshole that it is sometimes,

takes full shameless advantage of my irrational fear of shipwrecks in order to ‘fuck with me’ whenever it’s in a playful mood, and these are some of the ways in which it has done so.

In one dream, the captain of a massive luxury ocean liner was giving me the ‘grand tour’ of his ship, but while he was distracted, one of his officers pulled me aside and said to me, “it’s not on the tour, but if you want to really see something neat, go down to the bottom deck of the ship and see what makes it so special!”

I should NOT have taken his advice.

As it turns out, the entire bottom hull of the ship was one solid sheet of glass, and

when the dream skipped, I suddenly found myself standing not even two feet above the weed-covered wreck of an ancient wooden galleon, perfectly illuminated by carefully placed spotlights. I was NOT impressed.

In another dream, I was actually inside the hull of a sunken ship with the ghosts of it’s drowned passengers swirling around me, begging me to save them. Creepy-creepy.

In another dream, I was swimming in a lake when I decided to see if there were fish in the water below me, and when I dove down, there was the half-sunken wreck of a ship not even five feet in front of my face. WHY?

I’ve also had at least three separate dreams where I’m walking along the coastline of a lake at extremely low tide and trying my best to avoid walking too close to the barnacle-encrusted hulls of sunken fishing boats.

See? I'm not 'immune' to having bad dreams, my subconscious simply has to get very creative if it wants to well and truly creep me out.

    Wrecks...*shudders*
