Drawing these two again after what feels like forever! The concept here is that Finrod is in denial about Bëor dying (and it’d be an even bigger punch to the gut since Bëor is the first mortal friend that Finrod will see die) T_T

the ancestry of Elrond and Elros is so preposterously fragile

there are so many times where their ancestors almost didn’t survive, or were barely in the right place at the right time to marry and make a child together! i’ve posted more about that here — no need to go again through the laundry list of near misses and coincidences that goes into producing these two men

but the thing is - this string of improbable events feels a LOT like what happens when you have a time traveler nudging things to happen in just the right way at the right time to produce this specific outcome

so obviously the questions become (1) what horrible future awaits in a world without elrond’s guidance and elros’ descendants? (2) how do people figure out it’s these two who need to be saved for a better future? and (3) who travels back in time to fix this apocalypse-spawning event, and what do they do once they get there?

I think something seriously missing from Peter Jackson’s portrayal of the elves, something that Tolkien stresses almost every time he introduces an elf, is how joyful they are.

The elves of Rivendell, Mirkwood, etc are all portrayed as extremely jolly people. In the Hobbit book, when we are first introduced to the elves, they’re singing in the trees and teasing Thorin and co. Even when we’re introduced to the Mirkwood elves, who live in a much more dangerous environment, they’re feasting and singing to the barrels as they float down the river. Even after fighting in a war, their spirits aren’t dampened.

Tolkien stresses the joy of elves so much that it is used as a fucking narrative device to show when a situation is really really bad if even an elf is upset about it.

Elves are also meant to be a comforting presence to the reader, they are a kind and friendly folk and we know that the characters aren’t in danger around them.

Peter Jackson just kinda….misses all of that??? The films portray the elves as stoic and mysterious. All of the elves that he portrays rarely speak, let alone smile and it takes away from such a vital cultural aspect to the elves that they are an extremely warm and happy folk and it is their happiness that lifts the spirits of others and inspires them to carry on despite all the hardships.

          AN UNUSUAL QUESTION. One that halted the woman in midst of training, paused in mid-swing. Hedona often was silent in her approach, even if Serene detected her faint steps in near silent halls. Blade lowered, gaze shifted upon the other as she pondered in thought. Instincts demanded no teachings with blade be taught, it was her job as unofficial mother to protect Hedona, but the rational thoughts informed her of how important self defence was. Though, Logon would probably complain about Serene teaching his daughter how to use a blade.
