Friends...it is done. I have broken Octopath Traveler.
I defeated all the secret classes. And now? Ophelia is actually, literally unstoppable.
I went to Starseer first, because I loved that title. Turns out, her focus is buffs. She’s able to buff herself a whole lot, and has a bunch of neat tricks like that...but was actually pretty easy? Like, her shifting weaknesses were only a problem when she shifted to only weak to Dark. Upon getting the class, I learned something amazing. One of the skills, BP Eater, gives a full 50% bonus to damage when using any amount of BP. This...is insane. That’s a free 50%. And with that, the deed was done. I set Starseer to Primrose, and so began the lunacy.
We went to Runeblade, who had a lot of damage output, but also wasn’t that scary. Because Ophelia could hit damage cap on every cast. The downside of Primrose no longer being a Cleric was losing Aelfric’s Auspices on her to set up Ophelia more easily, and not having natural healing. The plus side was the buffs. Continuous healing of around 12%, a solid buff to defenses, speed, and evasion on a target to keep them alive, and gaining 2BP per action for 2 turns instead of 1? All absolutely bananas levels of strong. Upon receiving the Runelord, I decided that goes straight to Tressa. Who then discovered yet another skill: Elemental Edge. Give elemental attack and defense augmentation. Which is usually a temporary buff that gives +50% bonus damage. But is permanent with this skill. So Primrose...no longer needs to apply that buff. And Ophelia just always has 50% for that. And another 50% for using any BP. And 20% for using elemental attacks at all. So finally, I gave her Surpassing Power, to see how far above that damage cap we were going.
This led to the intense frustration of Winnehild, who is a bitch. I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe someone who can, at a moment’s notice, pull out “I can attack eight times for 1500 damage per swing on your entire party!” as one of her three consecutive actions in a round. The only solution was killing her so fast she couldn’t get to that. So that’s what we did. Turns out, there’s a combo that provides an absolutely disgusting amount of damage. Tressa’s runes, as it happens, are REALLY STRONG. So here’s the play.
Tressa uses her skill to apply Runes to the whole party for a few turns, then max BP in on an elemental rune of choice. Ophelia uses Elemental Break from Sorcerer, dealing at first a weak Staff-based attack that debuffs elemental defense for two turns...and then follows up with 20k damage from the rune. Then, you pump all three BP into one of her casts, which hit for 16k each. If Aelfric’s Auspices was up before you initiated this combo, the staff attack and the cast both activate twice, for a grand total of 136k damage, across the two rounds. To call this insane is an understatement. Upon figuring it out, we beat Winnehild in like five rounds of combat. It wasn’t really even fair, but then, she also wasn’t playing fair.
So that’s the end of that little side mission. Starting tomorrow, we’ll be aiming to clear the remaining character stories. Yeah, H’aanit and Cyrus are underleveled, but I doubt it matters when Ophelia is tossing out damage that can easily one-round most bosses I’ve seen.
