I genuinely worry about people who label certain categories of media to be beyond the capacity for critical thinking — either because they think the media is lesser and not worth dissecting as much as "classics" are, or because they think that examining a story to see what makes it tick is somehow a fun-ruining exercise.

The former especially worry me, because they don't seem to realize this is how they atrophy their own critical thinking skills rather growing them.

starting to get the d&d campaign idea juices flowing again after like a year and im now, once again, writing the most batshit insane lore for a campaign in which i have NO intention of the players interacting with it . like. i want it to be like the pale in disco elysium where the players are just living their whole lives trying desperately to think of day to day things and not the absolute cosmic batshit nature of the world they live in

of course i won't ask my crush to run away with me, haven't you seen the statistics?? they'd either die, disappear mysteriously or straight up laugh at me. no can do.

Got out my Tyrian Tarot cards and they say Hermit and Strength for Ardwyn

🌄 IX - The Hermit : Introspection, solitude, offering/being offered counsel, taking advice, seeking a truth or the self.

💪 XI - Strength : Soft and deliberate control, guidance and influence, compassion, enduring, reliability.

I'm going to throw them both into one because I think they go well together in Ardwyn's case! Thank you sm for giving me an opportunity to talk about him cuz I never do otherwise! Going to be mentioning his dads too, so as always Bearach belongs to the wonderful @resonatingfern <3

Both of Ardwyn's fathers are strong people in many ways - they are seasoned fighters so of course they are physically strong, but both Finnas and Bearach also have strong personalities, values and morals that I daresay they did their best to pass onto their son, so to Ardwyn the word "strength" is always something that will make him think of his parents.

While he did learn from them that strength comes in many ways personally he will always associate a feeling of comfort and dependability with the word, and I think that's an ideal he tries his best to live up to - to use his own strength to help and uplift those who are not (yet) strong enough to help themselves, rather than use it to harm and intimidate, and to call out people who do the latter.

That being said, I will segway over to The Hermit by saying he doesn't really know yet what else he really wants to do with his life.

His parents don't have any plans laid out for him, and even though he feels like he has big shoes to fill given that his dad was the Pact Commander and Champion of Aurene, I don't think Bearach would want his son to follow in his footsteps. I think Bear just wants him to be safe and not have him end up in a position where the weight of the entire world is on Ardwyn's shouldes.

And I think Ardwyn picked up on that, whether or not Bearach outright talked to him about that at some point, and of course he doesn't want to worry him so he tries to steer clear of any big adventures more for his father's sake than anything else.

Finnas on the other hand also wants his son to be safe of course, but always has and always will encourage him to do what feels right to him regardless, to try out new things (ideally without being needlessly reckless about it), to make his own way and his own experiences, all while being aware that it's alright to fall on your nose every now and then as long as you have it in you to get back up and try again.

So as it is rn, I think Ardwyn is still kind of struggling to figure out where all of that leaves him, torn between not wanting to disappoint and worry his parents (who he knows have both been through so much already) while also wanting to strike out on his own and leave his own mark on Tyria in some way.
