I was just wondering if you have any thoughts on the Timeline of Extinction? Because Sophie might've found Silveny, but two adult individuals aren't enough to save a species from extinction, and the elves obviously can't (or won't) clone, otherwise they would've done that with Greyfell.

The conclusion we kinda came to was that naturally, the alicorns are fucked. There simply aren't enough alicorns in the world for the species to repopulate (that we know of) and while Luna and Wynn will die a lot later than Silveny and Greyfell, they're still going to die and the timeline has just been pushed back a few thousand years.
However! If the elves were willing, it seems like there's a possibility they could interfere and use their advanced knowledge of genetics to help preserve the species. Things like gene splicing and genetic modification and all that fun stuff they could use to help repopulate the species--or cloning like you mentioned
The barrier there though is that elves probably wouldn't be willing to do something like that, even to preserve the species. They look down on messing with nature (source: Sophie) and would be judgemental towards the modified animals. They might not consider them "real" alicorns because their genetics were modified and think of the true alicorn species as extinct later on even if the modified alicorns were still alive. So I don't think they'd be willing to interfere in the ways necessary to preserve the species.
And given the very long life spans of the alicorns, it's not an issue that's going to need to be addressed for a while! As far as the time frame of Sophie's story goes, the Timeline to Extinction issue is a done deal. There was only one alicorn then she found another and they had kids. Nothing more on that front is going to happen to them in the course of the series unless they die or something. She did the thing and the story has moved on
Then there's also the deal with the gorgodon, as Linh mentioned. It may be an unnatural species but it is a species that now exists and as such will go extinct one day.
Essentially, my thoughts are: yep you're right the Timeline doesn't really make sense or work out given elven values and how biology works (to the best of my knowledge. it's been a few years since I took biology), but it's not relevant to the story enough for it to really be focused on. They'll probably go extinct one day unless something changes, but we won't know
